Just purchased Dead Island and need help getting it to run
As the title says, I have Dead Island Definitive Edition, but I wanted to play the original one because I like the atmosphere more and my PC where I live right now is not that good.

However, after purchasing it and installing it multiple times, I just get to see the logo for a moment but the game never starts. I read on the forums about multiple solutions and someone with a similar problem said

" Had problem with starting the game. Flashes logo and shuts down. So i noticed that Launcher had no -.exe . I added it and woks now. (DeadIslandGame.exe) "

However I'm not sure what they mean with the Launcher not having the .exe
Does that mean just going to Launcher options and adding the path of the game with the DeadIslandGame.exe at the end?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Same thing happening, but it probably has to do something with the cache remaining, I guess. I'll try to re-download the game and see if it works.

Well... unfortunately the problem still persists so my next question would be - could this be because I live in a region where this game is banned? Although I doubt it a bit, because I assume I wouldn't have been able to download it in the first place or at least I should have received some kind of a message.

be sure you instal the game in your C: disk
if it's ok, Another thing your may need to do is go to c:\users\"yourUserName"\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings\ and delete the file named "video".
the game will recreate it on next launch, it only saves the screen config so don't worry.

Thank you, I had already seen that and tried again. After getting all the files into Steam's default folder, I tried to start the game again and for a moment it showed a black screen as if it were to start but then showed the dead island logo again and afterwards nothing again - just as before. As for the Settings files - there are none since the game hasn't created any. I will see what I can do though.

This is going to be a dumb response, but are your cards updated, and is your system able to run it. I'm aware it's a 10 year old game, but it was never optimized correctly. I remember on release day for a few days after playing it would blue screen your computer because they released a developer version and not the retail version.

I think they are yes, I'll have a check one more time. Btw what does ".exe wasn't in the Launcher" mean? Just going to Launcher options and adding the path of the game with the DeadIslandGame.exe at the end of it?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a solution, but I will have a look these days and hopefully post my results here. Thank you both for all of the help!

That sounds like a file corruption, that almost sounds like a cracked pirated version and you don't have a disc mounter. I see that error pop up a lot on MyAbandonware. If that's the case then go for a mounter. If you purchased this, then you might have bought it from a bum place because you haven't been able to purchase the original Dead Island since Definitive was released.

I purchased the key and activated it on Steam. I didn't know that the game wasn't available anymore. I just thought I can't view the page on steam due to where I live.

It sounds like you got a bad key that has been used already. Whenever a games page won't show that means the developers have pulled it. I remember when Dead Island disappeared from the store, I can still play it, just can't buy it anymore. Keys were made to crack down on pirating, however when a key has been used it gets uploaded to the developer's servers as activated. Unlike other games that have been pulled by developers, Dead Island is still active and keys that have been used won't work anymore. If they shut the servers down, then it might work.

I hope you can get it to run somehow.

Thanks for your reply. I actually tried to purchase the game through Steam normally, because I already have the definitive edition, but I am studying abroad and my PC is not that good here. Also the country where I'm at has the game blocked (although I live elsewhere and it's not blocked there). So I thought if I can just buy the key and try to activate it, then it should work. And I can download the game and all after activating the key. It just doesn't start - all I see is the Dead Island logo and then nothing. However, steam tells me that I've already played 7 minutes total, although I haven't. And I even got a card of Xian Mei after trying to start the game once.
