if it's ok, Another thing your may need to do is go to c:\users\"yourUserName"\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings\ and delete the file named "video".
the game will recreate it on next launch, it only saves the screen config so don't worry.

That sounds like a file corruption, that almost sounds like a cracked pirated version and you don't have a disc mounter. I see that error pop up a lot on MyAbandonware. If that's the case then go for a mounter. If you purchased this, then you might have bought it from a bum place because you haven't been able to purchase the original Dead Island since Definitive was released.
It sounds like you got a bad key that has been used already. Whenever a games page won't show that means the developers have pulled it. I remember when Dead Island disappeared from the store, I can still play it, just can't buy it anymore. Keys were made to crack down on pirating, however when a key has been used it gets uploaded to the developer's servers as activated. Unlike other games that have been pulled by developers, Dead Island is still active and keys that have been used won't work anymore. If they shut the servers down, then it might work.
I hope you can get it to run somehow.
