Moving around feels spongy - game mechanics feel wrong
Is there any way to tweak this game? When I run around, it feels quite un-FPS like even though it is an FPS. I mean it feels spongy or like I am wading through water. Quite unlike smooth FPS games like CoD, BF and CS.

Can we tweak this?

Or another way to describe the movement is like I am a giant slug when trying to walk and strafe. Feels very alien to FPS genre.

I agree it feels poorly made and weird, but it isn't a big deal, you'll get used to it eventually.

Also you may find inventory management clunky aswell, but the longer you play, more it goes away and then eventually it gets fine.

Nope. I'm done now. You are right I found the inventory clunky and a bit alien as well. Also mission management using the map and quest page felt wrong.

I really cant get my head around the movement being so poor.

BUT, I enjoyed the game for all of 3 hours. Not a lot I know - but it really is kinda painful to me after a couple of decades of FPS games playing the right way. No biggie - And I understand why the rest of you guys like it. Just my view is all.

A shame they made the movement so oddly because I think I would have enjoyed playing it a lot more.

Also collecting cash/items off dead zombies steals the control off the player for a second which also feels odd.

Head movement within the vehicles feels wrong.

A few other odd things as well. I do wonder if this game is better played on consoles ........ I expect so. But I do not play FPS on consoles - only 3rd person games.

Again - could have been my new fave game for a few weeks but alas not meant to be!

That's sad to hear, to be very honest, it took me very long time and some pressure to get into the Dead Island, when I first played it for a hour, I seriously got annoyed by the way how movememt and inventory management felt, quit for months.

Came back again, same.
At this point, and I mean it, I totally hated Dead Island, and Dying Light was shining in my mind.

Again so I come back because of friend, was nearly... about to exit and uninstall it permanently so I could go back to Dying Light, that's all what in my mind was. All while forcing myself to play another minute, I was at around 4 hours at that moment.

And then suddenly I got somehow interested in to keep playing more, then as I leveled further, I took some interest in skills, then it caught me addicted, without even realizing, that's how it was in my case.

My favorite character would be Sam B, as it was my first character I started with and due to its great tanky and survival abilities, regenerating HP and huge damage reduction at critical health easily got my interest as it perfectly fits my playstyle of not using medkits and depending on tanking/dodging and regeneration.

And I can say that it gets really better and much more interesting as you level up, Dead Island is almost boring and feels like a chore in the beginning, but it gets truly awesome at mid/later game.

As of consoles, I'm not sure. But I can say that it was definitely worth it.

I appreciate what you say and I understand a lot of people like it, and I can see why.

I will not uninstall it yet, and who knows maybe I might try again - but what I really hope for is that someone mods it to fix the movement! :)

Do you mean you're microstuttering when moving? Try using a controller, and see if you still move like mud.

game plays very smoothly for me

Its hard to put it into words exactly. The giant slug metaphor was probably closest.

Try to imagine the main character as a puppet on strings and he is moved around by moving his strings. Everything feels slow and wrong and delayed, and clunky.

I wont try the controller with this game as it is a first person, but obviously anyone else having the same feelings can. 1st persons are best enjoyed with keyboard and mouse (for me).

I'll be damned if I'll play a first person shooter with a controller, ever. But just as much, I refuse to play a game with sluggishness.

Therefore, I advise testing it out, and seeing if the sluggishness goes away. It did for me, and then I got rid of it through ini edits, in order to go back to my keyboard and mouse setup.

If a controller indeed does remove the sluggishness, post the results here. If it does remove the sluggishness, then at least you know what's causing it, or what's not causing it. In either case, it's a net benefit.

I would be interested to know if someone felt the same as me regards keyboard and mouse and movement and then checked out the game with controller and their thoughts.

I 'might' even find time to try it out myself - but I have a load of 3rd person games on my PS4 to play using controller - and a load more 1st person games on PC. At the moment I cant dedicate my gaming time with Dead Island and go without keyb+mouse.

If the game controls can be improved through the ini files that would be fantastic and I'll google that now.

It's not that it's bad, it's just that a keyboard and mouse is a lot better in a first person shooter, except for the driving in this game, in my opinion, as driving is better with a controller..

That said, I'm not saying you should just use a controller. I'm saying, if you test it with a controller, and the sluggishness is gone, then at least you then know what is wrong, and then steps can be taken to rectify the issue.

i get the slug comment. the movement in this game is absolute ass, no better on gamepad or console. one of the most over hyped games. over hyped maybe the wrong words, but now that 2 is out everyone bragged up how much better the first one was, so i tried it out, if the 2nd is worse then im not going to even bother. easily the worst feeling controls on any more modern game. there is no "getting used to it" its more like accepting that this is what it is, it will never "feel good". on PC with gamepad or on PS5 with gamepad its junk, with mouse and kb on PC its also junk, never tried mouse on ps5 but im better it either doesnt support it or its still junk anyways. avoid the nostalgic people saying play this game, its not worth your time

ive been deep into fps gaming since at an early age myself and to me it just feels like im stuck in permanently applied v-sync and aim assistance rubberbanding regardless of ingame settings

wouldve felt better if it felt like more DayZ, at least the aim assistance is just absolute ass for general feel for the game.

still top3 best zombie games with games like DayZ because of what it is for its time in history of game development, wouldve definietly seen far greater success if aiming wasnt hardwired for console gamers who suck at aiming with their controllers and if supporting the upgrades of safe zones didnt feel completely freaking pointless to invest your time into.

It feels a bit better if you change the game's FOV using Steam guides. Narrow FOV was really killing me and felt claustrophobic in buildings.
