Rookie question about mining turret

I am flying a Sonora and switch out one of my normal weapons for a mining laser when i fancy some asteroid harvesting.

However now I can finally afford a turret mining laser. Are they worth the 2.5 cost of a normal one? Do they autofire on the correct spot on an asteroid?

Would appreciate any input from miners out there! Thanks.

p.s. for future ships that have turrets that I may use for combat (Foxbat?) are turrets a worthy addition/replacement for regular weapons?

No. The mining laser does not auto fire at the slots on the asteroids. You still have to aim at them after you scan them. However, it helps obtaining the resources incredibly fast and also of better quality. Keep your eye on the radar and mine the asteroids that are marked with the bigger marker than rest. Ironically, it is always the smaller asteroids that have big marker and big resources.

I ended up doing my mining with a regular non-turret mining laser. Wow does mining raise a lot of cash! I ended up slowing down my income so i could progress through the ships gradually.

Finally got a fully equipped Foxbat - nearly through to the end of the game (I think).
