Bring up your map, select a target, align to it and fly. Or select a mission and it will auto select the location for you.
I can fly to a star but a station or outpost appear elusive.

Not sure what's going on dude but can you bring up your map? Bring up the radial menu > local map. Select a location, like a station, back out and then you should see an icon on your HUD. Line up with it and fly to it.
It's in the local map which is in the Y menu rather than the start menu.

I use a Saitek 150 for flying (not great, but a little better than the mouse), but, when I go to the map "M", I mouse over the base and click to highlight it. You can do this with joy too. Are you clicking on the target? It won't do anything unless you click on it.

"Just what I needed, a gaggle of sh*theads!"
I can't read that comment because I have ad block installed.

The OPs post or mine? I didn't think I put any adverts in my post....especially since I don't know how to do that.

Yours. Advertising is against my religion so I block it out. Whether you intended to or not you posted an advert. I've developed the ability to filter it out. I just see a big black rectangle over a large chunk of the comment.

The confusion is because you would expect everything like that to be in the start menu and if you haven't run the command menu yet...

There's also a galaxy map in the start menu (redundant). It's a minor pitfall in the UI.

First, you get up from the chair you're sitting in. Then, while standing, put one foot in front of the other (keep alternating, putting your rear foot in front). Pretty soon you will discover that you are, indeed, going somewhere!
