You'll be able to continue your game, for sure. There will probably be some renown requirement, or other gateway to accessing the new area, so it's not like you'll be able to see the new content right away. The new area will likely have it's own self contained quest lines, which occasionally involve going back to places in the core region from time to time, to make it feel more like an interconnected world. I doubt that you'll see any sort of interactions appear in the core region before you actually visit the new area, though. All of this is just based on how the previous DLC worked.
There isn't really a "main story" to speak of in the core game anyway, just a series of interesting vignettes, until you're able to complete your ambition.
