Vagrus on Steam deck?
Have anyone tried Vagrus on steam deck? If so how playable is it and would you recomend it?

Hey All,
we have finally launched the improvements we had been working on in the last few months, including small screen and controller support. We just published it on our brand new Public Beta Branch. (More info here.)
These changes hopefully make the game much easier to navigate on Steam Deck. 🤞
We know, of course, that it's not perfect at this point so feedback is absolutely welcome. 👍
If you post them here or better yet submit an in-game bug report via F1, that would be most appreciated.
Thanks, cheers,

We would be interested to hear about this too.
(Applied for a developer Steam deck on the day of its announcement but no luck as of yet.)

I know this is a few months old now but I thought I'd report.

Vagrus plays like many other strategy games / CRPGs. The controls work well, no performance issues, etc. The main issue is the small text but that's an issue with many strategy games.

I'd say it is playable. It is definitely playable if you know what you're doing. If you only have a steam deck, I'd probably not recommend it just yet because I think it takes quite a bit of effort to learn on a smaller screen.

Thank you so much for sharing that. Really great to know that it's not that far off from 'enjoyable'. If you have the time, would you mind sharing which screens/parts are the most inconvenient ones and why?
Thanks a ton,

Generally, item management is a bit small with the UI and the narration is also small. However, when there is voice over, it doesn't matter as much. During the shopping and management UI sections, you could always use magnify - I personally don't like using magnify but I think it's because I need to hotbar it to something different for every game, not just Vagrus.

Some games like Rimworld have done a pretty good job at making the UI adjustable. Other games like Solasta, Clanfolk, etc are still quite small but playable. Vagrus would fit into this second category. I have no idea how hard it is to adjust UI on the steam deck but it couldn't hurt.

Rimworld is verified and I think rightly so. The other games I mentioned are considered playable and I think that's fair. Vagrus would likely be considered playable too, IMO.

I mostly agree with what Joel has posted. It’s completely playable. There are some things that could be improved though in my opinion.

The most glaring issue for me is no cloud saves. I’m certainly not one who would play exclusively on the Deck. I would imagine the majority of Deck users are using it as a secondary platform.

Be default, scrolling is with the shoulder buttons. The D-pad seems like it should also scroll by default.

Playing via touch screen and right track pad works well for the most part. I’d say scrolling is the only thing that is not comfortable. And of course we do a lot of scrolling :)

Font size has the same problem that it has on the desktop version. If you set the font higher (yea, getting old sucks), many of the tooltips for skills and perks end up off of the screen. The tooltips need to be kept fully on screen regardless of their size and point of origin.

I also noticed that the default screen resolution is not native.

That’s all I’ve noticed so far but I’ll try to play to test a bit more. If you add cloud saving I’ll play a lot more on the Deck :)

Ok there is something strange going on with cloud saves. Maybe it’s a deck problem and not a game problem. After going back to my desktop, I could see my Deck saves. But the Deck could not see my desktop saves.

I then made a new desktop save and that save showed up on the deck, but not the older saves.

Hmm. Assuming you opened Vagrus first on your Steam Deck after we had turned on the Cloud saves and so Steam took that as your 'baseline' and only looks for changes with creation/modified dates from that point. So you have to open and 're-save' those to be picked up but going forward they should be all synced back and forth.
Let us know if that is not the case. Thanks, cheers

That seemed like a good explanation but now I've had trouble again this morning. I've been playing on the desktop every day in the 5 days since my previous post and have made many manual saves. This morning I fired up the Deck again and I could see no desktop saves despite steam cloud saying that it was up to date.

I then started the desktop and Deck several times each to see if they would sync and they would not. I then made a new save again on the desktop, and then when I went back to the Deck that one new save showed up.

Again, I don't know if this is a Deck problem or a game problem. It seems like the deck is maybe only recognizing a new desktop save if the Deck was turned on and logged in when the save was made.

My son is borrowing my laptop right now. Maybe I'll get him to bring it by the house and I'll see how the saves are working on it for comparison. I've got about a dozen games installed on the Deck currently and the ones that support cloud saves had the desktop saves available the first time I ran them.

I got my son to install on the laptop and it pulled only the 2 latest cloud saves. One autosave and one manual save from today.

After that I fired up the Deck again and this time it told me it was out of sync with the cloud. On previous tests, it did not do that.

I tried syncing several times but it kept failing. I then ran the game and it asked me if I wanted to use local saves or cloud saves. I told it to use cloud saves and the 2 latest saves from the desktop showed up.

I’m scratching my head as to why it’s so inconsistent.

We are not 100% sure but it probably has to do something with Steam Decks being able to 'suspend' sessions which is not the same as exiting the game and does not automatically trigger the cloud save sync. So if you had the game suspended on SD while playing on our PC, when you resume it would not consider those files. That's our working theory, at least. :)
Valcus Aug 2, 2022 @ 5:17am
Each time on the Deck I’ve exited the game and then did a shutdown. I’ve found that suspending the Deck seems to deplete the battery so I always shut it down.

If possible will be nice to have possibility to choose 1280 x 800 (16:10 aspect ratio) * Steam deck display resolution. This possibly can help elevated small font issue.

Hey-hey,
we work on many things in parallel (new DLC, localization, small screen changes, controllers support, etc.) which makes it seem like there is little progress but the wait will be worth it, hopefully. :)
We completed our first round of small screen improvement plans, now it needs to be thoroughly tested then we can take another pass at it to make it a good experience.
On the other hand, we are just starting on the controller support implementation (wanted to finish small screen changes first to see if any UI had to be reworked in a way that would have affected the controller navigation. In the end, they did not.. but hey. :D)
Unfortunately, we need to tie off all 'in progress' features/changes to make sure the game is stable, so even if the small screen improvements clear testing and their second round, they will likely need to wait for some other stuff to be finished before they can be shared (likely in a closed beta thing) so more people could put it to the test.
So yeah, maybe hold off on Vagrus for a while, if you want to truly enjoy it on your Steam Deck. Or try it now and enjoy the improvements, even more, when they are released. :D
Thanks, cheers,
The Lost Pilgrims Team
ps.: unfortunately, we still have not received a Steam Deck devkit so we cannot test these changes ourselves specifically on that.
