"In the early stages you want to get rid of your scouts because all they do is increase your supply consumption.
Get enough fighters so the 'partially defended' tooltip disappears. Now you can use the third option when resting on the road without losing vigor.
Generally speaking, buy tons of supplies at Shelter or other places where the cost is only 1 coin. Try to keep vigor and mood above 7, preferably 8/9. Eat more to accomplish that. Marching lowers your mood and vigor, but it's worth it up until you have 3 points left. If you go down to 2 points of marching or below, it's not worth. So use those march points to move!
In taverns the middle option is the best one for resting. It gives you vigor which is incredibly important as well as +mood. Of course it costs extra money, but it's more than worth it.
Also avoid foraging and hunting as it loses you vigor and it's not worth it unless you specialize really well."
Those are the general rules. I think it was in ?Mines of Plenty? where you can buy Reinforced Cartwheels which give you +2 bonus march.
Dwarven Compass gives +1 movement but is really expensive for early game if you find merchant. Costs like 4000+.
But yeah, overpay your crew! Nothing more important than having those movement points.
Can't you do that without overpaying/oversupplying though? I can easily reach fast completion on all trade tasks without ever having to compensate in that way. In fact, once you get dwarven compass and scout master and you're doing a simple trade route where you feel able to just spam march, you can do most tasks in 1/2 the fast deadline while still maintaining morale.
