Have you tried the demo? It's freely available through Steam.

I just started early access and it's absolutely awful.

I spent all of my points into intelligence and cosmic magic, literally every single point. I found a spellbook. Made a basic arrow spell. I still have to kill every single enemy with my sword, because the spells do no damage.

I play as a full mage and my spells don't do any damage, I empty all my mana on a single enemy and it does nothing to him, the mana goes too quickly with no regen apart from consumables while the enemies die in 3/4 swings of the sword, for the moment magic isn't interesting and makes the game much more difficult.

Yea, that has to be some kind of bug. The little flamethrower spell actually does some damage, but it's not enough to actually win any fights with it, especially since you have to get real close and the enemies aren't stunned by it, so they just beat you up while you try to burn them.

Thanks for the info, I’ll hold off buying. Hopefully the devs will see this post

Since the update, things are going a bit better with the basic spells, it's normal if they don't do much damage as they're the first spells, but now they're enough to kill a monster and keep a bit of mana in reserve, manage your mana well and harvest/buy as many mushrooms as possible, don't rusher and aggro the monsters one by one and everything will be fine now.

With the latest hotfix (EA1.0.0b) some of your problems might be alleviated. I lowered early spell costs and upped the damage a bit. Let me know what you think, here or over in the feedback thread.

Played right before the update and a most of my time was after. The update was extremely noticeable with the dart spell now barely costing anything and effectively being capable as a primary source of damage. With that combined with mana regen that was either added or that I got at some point, I barely use melee. There's also a super early spell combo that pretty much gives you infinite health and mana if you're a bit careful, but I'm not built for that and prefer using other spells.

First thanks dev for responding and working on spells. I hope though having to fined mushrooms etc won’t be to overwhelming so that's all you worry about.

Also to everyone, 10 skill points in one of the casting skills gives you mana regen, you can basically have that before you even get the casting book if you know to do it.
Its so important that i feel like it needs to be mentioned in the tutorial pop-ups.

Ok, I did some testing after the hotfix, and magic feels like it's in a decent place now. I can kill most enemies using magic, but my mana does deplete quickly enough that when I'm facing two or three enemies at the same time I need to start using consumables or break out my sword.

The lack of regen kills my interest in magic. Playing this afternoon so presumably have the hotfix mentioned above. With 12 Int and 4 Cosmic, the magic bolt repeater takes about 3/4 of my mana to kill one enemy, and of course, there's no block when you're firing spells. The range is nice, but now I have to eat a grilled mushroom or backtrack to a shrine to fill up on mana. I've found about 6 mushrooms in the game, so they're gold dust.

And now that there's three schools of magic, your "power" is split three way, while a sword will tend to just need strength (and maybe dex on some).

Don't recommend magic at all. The only thing it's good for killing slimes as far as I can tell.

There is mana regeneration however it starts at level 10 of any arcane skill.
menkara Oct 5, 2024 @ 12:12pm
As the developer said there is passive mana regeneration starting at level 10 of any one magic skill. The points must be invested in a single magic skill, combinations of the points in multiple magic skills don't work. Intelligence is the most important stat - it governs mana and the ability to learn (combine echo stones) spells of any magic school. Cognition governs your memory slots for spells. You start with two memory slots, you gain a third at 12 cognition, which is plenty for combat situations. If you want to play as a caster from the start invest all 8 points at character creation in a single magic skill, and use the two point of your first level up to get it to 10. That way you get mana regen before even having spells. I recommend cosmic magic skill as its basically combat magic.
