Was this really written in Lua/Love2D?

The engine is c++, I believe, the rest is LUA script.

But nowadays I would not recommend to go that route, as other established engines offer more useability, and porting options.

Maybe, for your needs, Defold is a good choice; if you can live without Lua, then Godot; I would still try and learn Unreal, however.
