New to franchise, would you recommend this?
I've never played any stronghold game so would this game be a good start (plus the Stronghold HD included with the Warlords Edition)

I'd recommend the first Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader. Crusader was the first one to have a skirmish mode, so definitely Crusader more than Stronghold 1. This one plays similar to crusader, although way easier.

Problem with older strategy games is that they don't have wasd support for camera movement and you can't edit them, I guess that's the same here with these older titles?

This is true though Stronghold's older titles use the arrow keys instead of wasd. I think you might be able to change them with the definitive edition but im not 100% sure on that.

I found Warlords to be a lite casual version of Age of Empire. If you haven't play any Stronghold game before then maybe consider just the standard game at 90%, it's a nice deal to take.
The DLC adds more Warlords and maps but these are more of a reskin of the existing standard game kinda more of the same.

Edit: If you want to consider the original Stronghold:

Thanks for this and what I've seen, all the DLC campaigns are short. I'm probably just gonna pick the base game -90%

Good idea - that will gives you plenty to play for some casual fun. Also maps in the main campaign are fairly small.

ive had this on my wish list since it dropped on steam. i have all the stronghold games up to this. after 1 they just kinda wandered off into some weird lets never go back to the way people loved the original thing.

i have watched tons of youtube vids on this and even at 4 bucks....i still cant bring myself to touch this with a 10 foot pole.

the cramped maps are what kill it. crusaders its was kinda ok because it was different but just wasnt my cup of tea. i loved 1 because it emphasized castle building. this is just some twisted mobile port thats about spamming. makes me sad.

i would have hope that things would turn around but every game in this ip has been one downhill disappointment after the next. much like transformers or fast and furious sagas.....

they just need to let it die.

Base game campaign feels short and is basically an extented tutorial? I almost refunded the game even though got it cheap. But gladly I tried the skirmish mode before refund and that actually seems pretty fun so I'm gonna keep the game. Might get some hours of fun in that mode.

Pretty much. Skirmish is where it shines now days. The first game was more centered around castle-building and defending it from invading waves of enemies, which had no skirmish mode. Then came Stronghold Crusader, with its skirmish mode and squished maps. I'd say warlords is like a simplified reskinned Crusader.

Imo Warlords is a very good game (as someone who's played A TON of the original Crusader and didn't like later Strongholds that much), but I do not think it's the most intuitive or easiest to get into. Stronghold 1: Definitive Edition just came out and I highly recommend it as a starting point, it's a bit slower and gives you time to learn, the gameplay basically hasn't aged at all, and the graphics and controls got an update (yes you can control camera with WSAD).

It's more close to AOE series than Stronghold series.
