HeXen II

HeXen II

Where's the modding community for this game?
I've noticed that Hexen 1's modding community is surprisingly still active, making overhaul mods like Wrath of Cronos and Brutal Hexen.

Why aren't there any of those things for Hexen 2? Is it just not that moddable compared to Hexen 1?

Google Hexen 3 which is a mod for Doom 3, and has one playable hub.

Unfortunately, I don't own Doom 3. I was more looking specifically for major mods for Hexen 2.

But if I ever do get Doom 3, I'll certainly look into that! Thanks for the heads up :D

Unfortunately there aren't many mods for Hexen II. Somehow it never got the attention which other games like Doom and Quake had.
I've released a 2-level singleplayer pack for Hexen II not that long ago. I'm planning to make some more Hexen II maps in the future.

You can find a download link here:

Thanks. It's really unfortunate that Hexen 2 ended up being so obscure in that regard. Perhaps that'll change, someday?

Anyways, I'll be sure to check out that level pack :)

I hope so. Should you ever want to make your own maps for Hexen 2, you can always register at the Digital Distress forums and ask for help on how to get started. I've learned quite alot about Hexen 2 level design. Hope you enjoy the maps!

The thing is that the Hexen 1 modding community exists as an extension of the Doom modding community, since it's on the same engine. They're kind of different animals, since the Doom engine is 2.5D and Hexen 2 is a version of the Quake (or Quake 2?) engine, which is fully 3D. I think most modders that want to work with 3D engines tend to move on to more modern engines and games with larger communities.

Doesn't Quake/Quake 2 have a modding community though?

Oh well.

I think it has largely to do with how HeXen 2 wasn't as popular as 1.

Quake 1 still has a thriving custom map community. So I don't agree with people here saying it's because it's on the Quake 1 engine and because it's old. Popular games are the ones that have long lasting map editing communities.

There was a small modding community when this game first came out. Someone had made Hexen World (Hexen 2s version of Quake World) but doing a search for it turns up nothing now. It pretty much just fixed some server stability issues and allowed for the addition of skins and someone also modded a grapling hook in to it. There was also Hexen Siege which had 2 teams one defending a base and the other attacking but it never really took off well. I had a lot of fun playing this game as a kid. I'm kind of suprised the expansion pack isn't available on steam which added some more SP and a new class to play as.

I bite my tongue I found HexenWorld
