Having said that, if it is fun for you then have at it. Just don't be surprised when team mates start to call you out on it and don't be surprised when you get steam rolled in battles too.
Even before the purple and gold units unlock during the season, there are better units to pick for pikes, shield and sword than rattan.
About the purple and gold units, if i'm supposed to use them is it doable without spending money? I wanna try F2P at least for the first 100 hours.
Rattan Marksmen are still useful.
As for units in general, you don't have to use seasonal units if you don't want to. They are good but there are units in the unit tree that are pretty decent. Iron Reapers. Palace Guards. Imperial Pike Guards, Imperial Spear Guards. Men-at-arms. Hussars. Monastic Knights. Shenji Grenadiers. Don't sell the unit-tree units short. They all fill a role, its up to you to deploy them correctly and get value.
From the Rattan tree, only the Marksmen are somewhat good (but only if you have tons of purple crossbow doctrines slapped onto them) and the Rangers are somewhat playable. Bows are a meme, while Pikes and Swords will only appear okay while you are still low level, but once you hit lvl 80 or something and start running into purple units, they will just die with 1-2 kills at best.
You're using the pikes wrong if that's what your clearing. Charge doc, poison doc and soemthing for more pen and they will perform well in team fights. Mastered they'll slow enemies. I've killed Iron Reapers with Rattan Pikes, granted lost two thirds of the unit, but thats a great trade for a gold.
