We need an alert for when ranged units run out of ammo and switch to melee.
We just need a simple audio alert from a lieutenant that says “Sir, are troops are out of ammo!”

That way we can take action before they mindlessly advance into troops to continue under melee.

Ammo bar turning red is enough. You should keep attention to minimap and other indicators (unit ammo) to play effectively.
If you cannot I advice you to try to train it. Keeping attention to several things will make you better player.

I don’t have a problem knowing I’m low on ammo...it’s about better recognizing when they actually run out so I can pre-empt to the auto melee. Ranged units should auto aggro into melee unless told or forced in to it by an aggressor actively melee-ing them.

If the coding for AI is so complicated that they can’t have already coded this in, I assumed a simple audio alert would be easier and more appealing for the devs. Because let’s be really, your units WOULD have some way(a lieutenant) to alert the leadership that they are low...and some way to alert that they are resorting to melee.

I stay close to my units...I’m typically in ear shot.

Ha, It would be nice if they’d switch to “sharpshooting”/focused firing when targeted unit numbers drop below 20% or something. It is wasteful to implement saturation firing against 3 guys.

Your ideas are not so easy to code. And would have heavy impact on performance.
You expect the game to recognise if the dynamic target of your unit is drop below 20%?

Please read some about programming.
You will have better knowledge how realistic are your expectations.

Mine go into melee mode automaticaly for no reason what so ever. full ammo. just if close prox to enemy to switch to swords. I dont get it, can i turn off auto melee?

Some units get abilities to keep firing at close range. It is a "feature" that they stop firing, or scatter, when enemies get close.

I remember when I first started to play this game, I did not know that you could refill your bowmen with arrows. So as soon as they were out of arrows, I would send them off to go melee. Of course they would die, but that is how I thought they worked. lol Same with the gunners.
