If you cannot I advice you to try to train it. Keeping attention to several things will make you better player.
If the coding for AI is so complicated that they can’t have already coded this in, I assumed a simple audio alert would be easier and more appealing for the devs. Because let’s be really, your units WOULD have some way(a lieutenant) to alert the leadership that they are low...and some way to alert that they are resorting to melee.
I stay close to my units...I’m typically in ear shot.
You expect the game to recognise if the dynamic target of your unit is drop below 20%?
