Problems trying to use two controllers

I plugged in two xbox controllers last night (up until now I've been using the keyboard while my partner uses an xbox controller) but the game fails to recognise the controllers properly when both plugged in. Both controllers experience loss of control (continually cycles through costumes/levels etc without touching the controller) and the shoulder buttons have no effect. Currently means it's impossible to play with two controllers.

Each controller works fine on its own but two controllers together clearly create a major conflict. Any ideas please? Any help would be massively appreciated, thanks!

EDIT: SOLVED!

Turns out I simply needed to uncheck the xbox controller configuration in steam settings!
