is there any way to check or change your difficulty level once you've already started a game?
I cannot remember which one I chose and this is just my first time playing through so I can't really... tell...

Sometimes it feels easy, sometimes easier than I'd expect, but I'm pretty bad IMO so I dunno. I definitely didn't choose "hard" because I pretty much never do. Is there any way to tell?

I remember trying to change it on the xbox version. I wasn't able to. Normal is definitely too easy.

+set g_skill x (type this into steam launch parameter)

0-recruit
1-marine
2-veteran
3-nightmare (you get/start with soulcube here)

or ingame, open up console and tpye: g_skill x

i did that to g_skill 3 and it keeps saying "obsolete" in game, as in some weird sound file that keeps repeating.

Open console, type "g_skill" without anything else to it and it should tell you what set.

"Nightmare" mode is recommended to go with a new game start, since it works different than other difficulty modes, for example there are no random medkits. Changing difficulty mid-game is actually kind of a twist, you may have halfway results.

I think that feature is intended, as your health constantly drops back down to 25HP while playing on Nightmare
