Doom 3 is more focused on the atmosphere , the action is slower and the fight themselve are less intense. compared to Doom 1 , 2 and final doom Doom 3 has way less enemies at the same time ... and the PDA and audio logs that give hints that are sometime required to grab more ammo and guns which tend to slow down the game even more.
Doom 1 and Doom 2 have more actions while Doom 3 have a better atmosphere.
John Carmack said that Doom3 is what he was envisaging when he created Wolfenstein3D.
Incidentally, I played Quake2 more than any other iD game.
You wont get tense realistic atmosphere from Doom 1 or 2 because they are about 20 years old, 2D games with extremely limited shadows and lighting,
You could watch some youtube gameplay vids and form your own opinion though.
If you want a more horror themed shooter try FEAR 2. The original FEAR was technically better, but looks quite dated now.
Quake 4 is another alternative. It is more gory than Doom3 and the graphics are an improvement.
