Doom 3 more than 60FPS ?
Hello,

is it possible to run this game with more than 60FPS ? Screen tearing sucks and with vsync it's unplayable.

You've got a couple options:
A) Turn all option down and vsync on
B) Deal with screen tearing
C) Deal with Vsync (Vsync caps your game at 60, so you can't really get more)
D) Get a new system

I recommend you deal with screen tearing and even remove it from all of your games, as all it does it lock down your FPS, give you unstable frames, and remove tearing.
The tearing is something that is easy to get over.
Just force yourself to play with it in all your games and usually you wont notice.

My system isn't the problem...
Why I should reduce the quality ? this doesn't make sense, because Doom 3 is capped by 60 fps.. I just want to know, if there is a command to remove the frame lock.

I'm running at 87 fps, so it's not capped.

The 'frame lock' you speak of is Vsync.
Vsync's job is to cap the frame rate to your monitor's HZ rate.
If you turn it off, you get loads of frames.

Turn it on, you get caped under 60 fps.

That's how it goes, there is no in-between.

Yeah but ingame it's not activated. But max fps are always 63, with vsync 60

I've got a 144 Hz gaming monitor, and it is actually important for a lot of us to get more than 60 FPS. And yes, you can actually tell the difference. The tearing in this game is just over the top.

im playing it with vsync off, fps seems to be locked @ 63fps an im not getting any screen tear.

I had a look at google from what I can read Doom 3 engine is hardcoded to show no more then 60fps , that above this it's will only copy those frames Instead of creating new ones ... it's a 10 years old games we're talking about after all.

all id engine games are locked to 60 fps, you cant change this
you will still have screen tearing even if game is not locked at 60 fps, it has nothing to do with that, screen tearing comes from VGA and your monitor mainly

yep, back in the days of doom 3 there weren't many, if there were any at all, 144hz monitors that I remember. In fact, systems were so taxed to rum this game, that maxing it at all was pretty much impossible, except as a benchmark, so 60 fps was a good mark to develop around. Makes sense that the game would be coded to use that rate as a maximum, and also to have aspects such as screen tearing happen when you force it upon the engine.

games are locked to 60 fps for having same fps for all players in MP mainly, so nobody has advantage, this is why id engine is capped at 60 (this is what i read somewhere)
(and helps a lot to keep your vga more quiet,+lower temp, in some situation this can save ur vga life/lifetime)

That might actually make some sense, games that have harcaps usually have the physics system coded with frame pacing, so as if you would speed up time and everthing else when speeding the feed of frames over the cap,

That's exactly how it works in Doom3. Technically you can remove the frame cap by disabling VSync and using "com_fixedtic 1" in the console, but really all it does is make everything in the game run in super fast motion.

yes thats why the benchmark is so fast :D
but this is ,cheaper' development in money and time as well when you manage your things to framerates

Set it to -1, that should remove the cap without breaking the speed.

when this game came out i was running it on a 24" crt at 100hz refresh. i've never had any screen tearing with vsync enabled. 60fps is plenty for a single player game to be smooth. but i do plan to get an lcd with a high refresh soon because my 60hz 1080 monitors can't compare to my old diamond pro at 85-100hz when it comes to fluid motion.
