because when the game first released, the spread was horrendous and led to tons of people ♥♥♥♥-talking it nonstop, with even some making various YouTube videos on the subject. And as someone who has some experience with firing real-life shotguns, even I found that spread pattern to be stupid.
And this is why some will suggest downloading either 7-Zip or WinRAR to manually modify the game's files to tighten its spread, as it was then found out the shotgun's spread pattern was set to "22" during development. But that video that I posted above works just as well, as it not only tightens the spread to a more manageable level, but you can also give yourself some bit of range and still make headshots with it.
For distant enemies yeah you have other weapons for long range.
I feel arguments like "real guns dont work like this" to be pointless when it comes to games. Games are not meant to be realistic (unless realism is the selling point).
Doom 3's arsenal is balanced in a way so you switch between weapons more often. I feel each weapon has its purpose.
I like classic Doom's shotgun but classic Doom didnt have an assault rifle.
To each their own but like i said i really enjoyed getting up close to the enemy with my shotgun. Knowing when to strafe left, right, or back and knowing the right moment to fire.
