May be you should try to fix it via some mods, that introduce their own config?
Redux is a good one at improving picture and keeping impressions of vanilla game.

I'll try that.

There are no need for mods.

Edit the DOOM3 Config

-

Go to :

...\Steam\steamapps\common\Doom 3\base

Open DoomConfig with Notepad or Notepad++

search for r_mode
change value to "-1"
**this unlocks the resolution**

Just above 'r_mode' there will be these lines

seta r_customHeight
seta r_customWidth

Changes these values to "1080" and "1920"
**self explanatory**

Next search for 'r_aspectratio'
change value to "1"
**this sets 16:9 ratio, 0 = 4:3 and 2 = 16:10**

Save and close DoomConfig

Now launch the game and you will have 1080p with proper widescreen scaling, without the need of a mod. Just make sure you never change the resolution in game or the settings well revert on 'r_mode' and 'r_aspectratio', which will need to be changed again.

I've done this all, but when I launch the game the "fullscreen" only takes up a 1/4 of my screen and nothing more, I can still see my desktop etc behind the game window despite being set to 1080p??

Try this:
Go to game folder > find doom3.exe, go to Properties > Compatibility > Change high DPI settings > tick Override high DPI scaling and set to Application.
You may also try Dhewm3 source port, it should work better.

Hey this worked for me! Had so much trouble getting the fullscreen to scale properly. For anyone googling, I had fullscreen only displaying the upper left corner of the full image. I'm on an AMD build with RX 5700xt and I suspect it was part of the issue. Thanks Vlad, you helped me two years after your post. :)

If playing in 16 -9 like with 1080, then use r mode -1 like others said.

That corrected a mod I previously used that was always using window mode.

THANKS! This worked for me. Revisiting this old gem on my old laptop and now I have full screen perfection
Thanks, for me the config file was in users/saved games/id software/DOOM 3 BFG/base, not the steam directory just in case anyone can't find it i thought id put it here.
