My personal favorite mod is Overthinked Doom 3, this turns the game into more of a survival horror experience. Your weapons do more damage, but there is less ammo, and enemies can kill you much faster. Tactical movement options like ADS and lean are added, and most guns are given an alt fire.

Another very popular mod is Perfected Doom 3, this one goes in the other direction and is a power fantasy where the weapons are all overhauled to be more satisfying. I haven't played this one myself, but people really seem to like it.

There also the recent Doom 3 Phobos, which is it's own campaign with new maps and tweaked enemy AI. It's been in development for years and is supposed to be really good.

The best source port is dhewm3, but you don't need it, and most mods won't work with it.

when they gonna lauunch the episode 3 of phobos ?
for classic "Doom 3" mods...

i'd recommend the Trent Reznor Soundpack, which reinstates the original sounds that Trent himself had managed to create before he left the project.

There's also a Radar Mod for the Plasma Gun that, once you download it, it pretty much adds a built-in Radar to the Plasma Rifle (probably the closest thing to an "Aliens" style Motion Tracker, minus the iconic pinging)

and if you really wanna wreck enemies, there's also a Double-Barrel Shotgun mod that brings this very weapon over from the "Resurrection of Evil" expansion game. However, if you're gonna play the "Resurrection of Evil" expansion, you'll need to delete the mod from the base "Doom 3" game.

That one mod that makes corpses stick around, and enables self-shadowing on monsters. It will screw up the final boss fight though, since if corpses stay around no new monsters appear to recharge the soul cube

the Nitro Gore Mod?

i've heard that particular mod tears up your frame-rates once enough bodies start stacking up

D3HDP - Doom 3 Essential HD Pack is a great visual improvement.

I would also suggest installing the realistic weapons mod which you can find on ModDB (There's also a video of it on YouTube).

What it does is modify the weapon stats for most of the weapons (pistol, shotgun, machine gun, chaingun, grenades, ect.) to make them more realistic. It also improves the sound effects significantly, plus it it adds a flashlight onto the pistol. I personally enjoy it as it fixes most of the gripes that I had with the game, especially with the shotgun (even though I think it's good as is, I just hate using it as a melee weapon).

In short, if you're looking to keep the vanilla DOOM 3 experience but add a twist to it, this is the way to go.
