DOOM 3

Do you guys really like to play without Duct-Tape mod?
I haven't play vanilla Doom 3 for over 10 years, bought and played the BFG edition a few years ago and thought it was pretty ok except having way too much ammo. I bought the vanilla Doom 3 to see if it's really better without duct taped flashlight, and after playing for a few hours. I can't see why people think the game is better this way...can't see what I'm shooting at in a lot of pitch black area. the EAX sound and amount of ammo is way better then Doom 3 BFG tho.

When I first played the game I used the duct tape mod, but recently I've restarted the original game with the Redux 2.0 graphics mod, which does NOT have a gun/armour mounted flashlight, and so far (I'm at alpha labs) I'm liking the mechanic. In fact sometimes the mounted flashlight is a distraction since I get confused between the crosshair and the centre of the beam. My opinion might change later when I get the smaller, more fast moving enemies like the spider-men and the flying babies.

I'm also at alpha labs 4 now. wow! Redux mod looks awesome! I've never mistaken the center beam of flashlight and the crosshair, but i sometimes can't see the crosshair because it has similar color as some of the walls

the whole point of the flashlight was to make you choose between being able to see or being ready for a fight. the entire game was designed around this. thats why if you notice in HELL you see the "lighting" isnt real, alot of it is literally painted on the floor and walls.

No, i don't like easy modes. And Doom 3 is already easy AF with the flashlight.

Carmack said in QuakeCon 2012, that the decision of making flashlight and weapons separable was made due to the hardware limitations of that time, and the game definetly wasn't designed around it.

That's true tho...game is kind of boring with shoulder flashlight in BFG.

I know...but not being able to see what I'm shooting at is boring,is like there's no feedback at all, i'm just pressing left button at black screen until I hear the dying scream.

saw that video too, they did this to reduce the amount of light sources...made me felt like they focused on how the game look more then how it plays,I would rather have worse graphics and better gameplay.

Well, he said it eight years since the release of the game and it looks like, that it was just an attempt to excuse the chages in BFG edition. Personnaly, I have no problem with game design of DooM 3, it's one of my favorite FPS, actually.

To say the least about the "security" force in Doom 3 not having nightvision goggles, either, but all it shows is that, lore-wise, the UAC was cheap af. Cheap flashlight, cheap shotgun, cheap tech.

That said, who needs duct tape when you have map knowledge and glowing imp fireballs?

I don't understand the common criticism of "the flashlight makes no sense." Why WOULD there be duct tape on a Mars research base? They're professional engineers from the future, not amateur contractors. What the hell are they gonna use it on? "Damn man, it's a hull breach, better get out the duct tape."
Even if the marine did find some duct tape, where would he tape it? To his gun? He's only got one flashlight, to which gun is he going to tape it? Besides, have you ever actually tried to tape an entire flashlight to a gun? I doubt it's as convenient as people make out. Maybe you could say he could tape it to his shoulder, but then he would have to reorient his entire body if he wants to point the light at a certain spot.
I've heard "oh he's so stupid he can't hold a gun and a flashlight at the same time." There's only one one-handed weapon in the game, the pistol, and even then he holds it with two hands. If you're so smart then you try and fire and reload a ♥♥♥♥♥♥' shotgun while somehow also pointing a flashlight in a useful way.
My only problem is that the flashlight is unrealistically garbage. Real flashlights don't only shoot out a tiny little beam. I guess it's because UAC is cheap but c'mon, even the cheapest real flashlight is better than Doom 3's.

Never played with duct tape mod, never gonna use it since I never needed it. Maybe you need to adjust the brightness on your monitor.

idk, tape it on your right forearm? or on top of the smg,or maybe tape it like ACOG scope on top of shotgun lol. I think the flashlight only lit up a tiny circle is because Doom 3's shadow looks really dark, maybe it's a technical thing? In Quake 4,only the pistol, rifle and shotgun has flashlights. I think that works pretty well, but it's a complete different style of gameplay tho.

I don't believe him. I am nearly certain he was just saying since everyone gave Doom 3 so much crap about "hurr durr no duct tape on Mars durr".

Kind of doubt it,too. Because there are weapons with flashlight in Quake 4 which use the same engine...or maybe they found a solution after Doom 3 released.

that won't work because the bright areas would look too bright and the pitch black area would still be black.

Well dark games in general are best played in dark rooms tbh. I'm not talking only about Doom 3 but any game that is dark. For example if I got ma windows open and it's a sunny day, it doesn't matter how bright my monitor settings are, I will still hardly see anything. So if it's night, turn the lights off and enjoy.

I've never used the Duct Tape mod. Never needed it. If you set your brightness correctly and play IN THE DARK (as it's meant to be played) with headphones (use your other senses) you should barely ever need the flashlight.

One of the things people seem to overlook when they say Doom 3 is too dark is that tons of things glow in this game, including enemies. Almost every creature you go up against has some kind of bioluminescence to allow you to target them without the flashlight.
