DOOM 3
shotgun spread
Is there a way to fix the spread of the shotgun in game? like how you can fix the fov or make the game full screen from the command screen? im new to playing on computers.

i dont know if there is any command but if there was it would probably be too long and complex

however the shotgun was made like that, it was to create tension since you coudnt use it at long or medium range because it would hit nothing

pak000.pk4:/def/weapon_shotgun.def at line 91 is where the spread value for the shotgun is stored, it can be edited using winrar to open the pk4 file, and notepad to modify the def file. By default the spread value is 22 and a good value to set it to is 6. pak000.pk4 is stored in the "base" folder within Doom's install location.

I'll warn you though, reducing the spread makes the gun, well, usable, incredibly usable in fact, and Doom 3 isn't balanced to have a usable shotgun. Other games balanced their shotgun by having an ammo scarcity, this game balanced it by turning it into a party popper.

Just fight your gut to aim to head and go for torso. Doom 3 shotgun is somewhat infamous on its spread....

This actually works wonders, thank you! :) I already beat the game numerous times, without any cheats. I loved the shotgun anyway, and never had a problem sticking it up a demon's nose, but reducing the spread like this really brings back the classic Doom vibe. It's a nice way to have some fun with it. Cheers!

Neat idea for a replay. The shotgun in Doom 1/2 was so amazing to shoot.

FEAR is a game with an amazing shotgun, if you haven't played it yet.

I did this way back. I narrowed the shotgun's spread and reduced the damage so that point blank head shot will still kill an imp, but further back it may take two hits. It feels just punchy enough. I also sped up the plasma bolt velocity to match the original Doom. I don't like playing it any other way.

Good tip although the modification wasn't picked up in the beginning of the level. This makes the shotgun more like a weapon than a bullet sprinkler. Doom 3 is a good game but I would have liked faster pacing and better combat system especially on replays.

man i cant find the .pak file can you tell me where it is please?

Right click on your game in your steam library Manage -> Browse local content. From there navigate to the "base" folder there, the pak files ought to be in that folder.
Would just link a pre-made mod to make things easier, but Steam filters out links.

Doom 3 has one of the best video game shotguns ever. I'm not sure where this narrative comes from with people claiming it's bad or unusable. The spread incentivizes running up to enemies and blasting them in the face which is satisfying AF and can even 1-hit some mid-tier enemies like Revenants. The entire game takes place in corridors and the few outside sections are really just slightly larger corridors, so there's no reason to modify the spread

What some of us don't like is that it spreads so far as to be useless except for cramming the muzzle up your enemy's nose. It spreads wider than the SSG in RoE. If you like it, hey, that's fine. Some of us prefer something closer to the original Doom 12 gauge.
