Sandwich server issue
I have been trying to connect with the "Sandwich" server for online Doom 3 for some time now and each time I encounter an issue. The server requires about 200MB of download. The game infobar says the server offers only part of the files required to make a connection. I download anyway to see whether that will suffice, but eventually, at the end of the entire download procedure, there is persistently an error.

Hello Triple_Agent_AAA

Doom 3's in-game downloader is not very good. It does not like downloading at modern high speeds, if you are able to limit your Doom 3's connection speed you will most likely be able to download in-game.

My first suggestion is downloading this following tool. A good Doom 3 friend of mine made this in January.

http://www.moddb.com/games/doom-iii/downloads/uac-explorer

Download that utility and select The Sandwich Server, then select connect, it should attempt to download the files for you.

I am uploading the Sandwich Server files for hosting right now, it will take 30 or so minutes to upload for me, so I will post back here when they are ready.

Hey Triple_Agent_AAA

The file upload has completed, you can find the files here:

http://volocious.com/Sandwich/Doom%203/

These files will need to go into your Doom 3 folder in Steam. The default path is the following
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Doom 3\

You will need to make a folder called emz in that Doom 3 directory.

At this link will be two folders, one "emz", one "base". EMZ files will need to go into the new emz folder you have made. The base files go into the base directory that should already be there.

Also, if you get it to work and want to play some competitive multiplayer add me on steam and I will play.

Thanks for the help Volocious, will likely use the link that you provided, but I would also try the download ingame to check. I know the sandwich server creates "emz" folder, but what about the "base" files?

The "base" folder is part of the main game, map files have to go in there, unfortunately it ends up cluttering up your base folder. Do not delete the files that are in base already, those are required for the game to run.

I do think there is a way to allow the map files in a separate folder, but I could be mistaken. I have never tried, I just have a backup of a "clean" version of the base folder.

If you have mods for singleplayer that you have put in the base folder, those will need to be removed first.

If any mods (not maps) require you to put files in "base" folder that mod is improper and I can convert it to a proper mod if you give me a link/files

Yes, unfortunately I just took notice of the excess of files in the "base" folder. It would be good if they were separated from core game files, such as it is with mods that they can be placed in a separate directory. When it comes to download ingame, unfortunately still the same, error. Pity we cannot have a game just basing on the common Doom 3 setup, though I understand the main strength of Doom 3 nowadays are mods and moddability.

I will try and find the way to put maps in a separate folder, if I find anything I will report back here. Unfortunately, the in-game downloading is very bad. When i limit the game to 3MBps MAX the in-game downloading works just fine.

The UAC Explorer program works well for me, I place the program in my Doom 3 folder, and I have no issue using its downloader.

Since BFG edition came out they never polished Doom 3 vanilla to work better with modern set ups. But I think it is worth it, if you still have issues after trying all of my previous posts, let me know.

The original Doom 3 is becoming a legitimate retrogame, but it still holds up well.
