Great initiative, nice that you want to reignite the Doom 3 multiplayer, but as the folk wisdom says, it is hard to pour out from an empty cup.
ive always wanted to doom 3 MP but theres never anybody in the lobby
Tournament is an organized event with hermetic community but in the open, unfortunately most servers require quirky downloads that via the game downloader often fail, preventing the joining.
That is why I highly suggest UAC Explorer, it is an external Doom 3 server browser / host manager. The downloader built into it has never failed me.

Gameconsoles do one thing right, namely, for most casual players they allow simply a plug&play approach, meaning, you get a thing, you run it and it works. PC gaming could be extended with possibilities but it also demands quite a bit of know-how, get-around and a lot of good will. The latter one is actually an exclusive good nowadays, especially rare if in need of social synchronicity.

Well, I believe most games on PC and Console are 'plug & play', but when you add in user created items such as mods or maps the console is better at hiding the fact you are downloading those items, they just put it behind a loading screen most of the time. But that is off topic for this thread.

You see, if it happens the official way and automatically, it is one hand, but if you dig in deeper for the mods, you make your way to a place that separates you from the mainline community, with few to none individuals of company. I am not against using mods. I am for making things practical. Mods are great, for singleplayer. For that reason, any multiplayer that relies on mods right off the bat is basically big time cut down. Another problem is dividing of the community. Mods can do that, with some people playing on mods making the game incompatible online with the vanilla audience. Other thing is simply releasing simultaneous but online incompatible versions of the game.

Well back when this game was a new release the autodownload for the mods worked quite well, the downloader now fails due to higher speed internet.

I rarely play singleplayer games and multiplayer mods are an excellent addition to most games. Garrys Mod and Counter-Strike: Source are great examples of how to do multiplayer mods well. Minecraft is a great example to show off how you can expand the content of the multiplayer gameplay, but not a good example of implementation.
I oftentimes feel I owe it to various multiplayer striving and dying communities to at least attempt to aid them and maybe help them having some games going, but for real, I do not believe in the multiplayer. I just see too many counterexamples. In turn, singleplayer - especially modded, where the mods do have field to make big change - could be eternal, ideally speaking. Gaming started with singleplayer and it will end with singleplayer, that is why I think all those multiplayer only games are lazy approach, as the work to make a solid story driven campaign is much more, furthermore, multiplayer only it is a quirk and an experiment with short life expectancy.

It would obviously depend on the genre of the game, some games would not work as a singleplayer. I personally enjoy the social side of most video games. Admittedly, I skip most cinematic scenes and rarely read into the story of a game. I much prefer to play with the mechanics of the game rather then anything else.
My experience with Halo would not have been the same with out the co-op gameplay. Not saying that I don't appreciate some video game stories, I just find them unable to captivate me. In the recent years the only game that made me want to stop and read every text and listen to every cinematic scene was Horizon: Zero Dawn. Unfortunately, I do not own a playstation (or any other console) so I was unable to finish the story. The mechanics of the game were amazing as well, but the entire time I played I was wishing it had a co-op capable campaign.
Having the choice of playing with others I think is a very important element that game studios should be adding to most of their games. I would have sunk a lot more hours into Skyrim or Just Cause or FarCry if I had the option to have a friend play the story with me.
Do you talk about couch co-op or deathmatch style games?

Tournament is over!, The winner of "Doom 3 Volocord Tournament #1" is Roquefort!, congrats to him. Also congrats to Volocious who was the runner-up.

Happy to announce that I'm organizing another tournament which starts in June 25. Same rules as "Doom 3 Volocord Tournament #1"
