4:3 is the way to play over 16:9
After experimenting with 16:9 and 4:3 ratios I have to say that 4:3 is the superior aspect ratio. With the 16:9 aspect ratio you cut the top and bottom portions of your view. You tunnel vision with Indy being too close and missing more of the surrounding environment.

How can I change the aspect ratio? Also why is there no true widescreen patch for this or the GOG version?
UnfriendlyGuy01 Dec 16, 2022 @ 2:44am
Thanks. But does this only affect the HUD or also the FoV?
Drumsin Dec 16, 2022 @ 6:53pm
If you follow the instructions in the readme.txt, it will not affect the HUD.
As far as FoV I don't remember. You can always test it out and revert it if it doesn't suit you.

Sorry if I'm being annoying, but I can't figure out at all how to set this game into 4:3 mode. Neither with the Steam or GOG version. It's always in 16:9 mode no matter what resolution I set

Oh, I'm sorry. I misunderstood your question.

You can try going into the game menu and selecting a 4:3 aspect resolution.

Maybe try several of them to see if any work? I know I had this issue at one time, and experimented with several of them to work with my monitor.

4:3 resolutions:
1024 x 768
1280 x 960 (it's been awhile, but I think this one worked for me)

Thanks! I tested out all resolutions and 720 x 576 is the only one that put it in 4:3..... however it looks very unsharp/blurry now but guess there's nothing I can do about that

One last question: I don't have 1280 x 960 resolution under the display options. How can I manually put that resolution?
Drumsin Dec 20, 2022 @ 8:28pm
Open the game launcher menu.
Under "Video Settings" > "Advanced Display Settings".
Drag the slider to the highest possible resolution that matches a 4:3 aspect ratio.

That's the thing, I don't have a 1280x960 option on the slider..... I give up, I'll just suck it up and play 1920x1080 with the more narrow FoV

Now you have me curious. What are the different options you see with the slider?
UnfriendlyGuy01 Dec 21, 2022 @ 1:50pm
I will list them all:
- 512 x 384
- 640 x 480
- 720 x 480
- 720 x 576 (only one in 4:3 but it's blurry)
- 800 x 600
- 1024 x 768
- 1280 x 720
- 1280 x 800
- 1280 x 1024
- 1366 x 768
- 1440 x 900
- 1600 x 900
- 1680 x 1050
- 1920 x 1080

Tested with both the Steam and GoG version.

Strange, with a fresh install with the Steam version I have an option for 1920x1440. I wonder if it's video card related.

The resolutions you have listed. You've mentioned 720 x 576, and that looking blurry. That is actually a 5:4 aspect ratio.

5:4 aspect ratios

720 x 576
1280 x 1024

==========

4:3 aspect ratios

800 x 600
1024 x 768

I would try 1024 x 768 seeing that it is your highest 4:3 resolution. One thing I have found with my game install is that I had to change the video resolution through the game settings and not the launcher in order for the change to go into effect.

Maybe even try the 1280 x 1024 resolution if 1024 x 768 doesn't work. It's a higher 5:4 aspect ratio, but not sure if this will appear more horizontally stretched for you.

Also, I want to clear up some misinformation I mentioned earlier on the patch files I linked above. My game wouldn't work without them. They also fix a crash issue on certain level, so they are worth a try. You can still play the game at a 4:3 ratio with the patch, but also 16:9.

A great aspect ratio calculator: https://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/aspect_ratio/

Thanks for letting me know that 720x576 is actually 5:4 and not 4:3. I genuinely didn't notice at first. As for your suggested resolutions, for some reason they all simply stretch the image to 16:9 instead of being 4:3.

I was wondering if there is a HEX editor on the game files to change the resolution manually but I didn't find anything

most ratios have the interface go bonkers
but I found 1600x1200 to be the most stable and fitting
any other resolution that isn't 4 to 3 will have the interface go "nope, the stars are not in position"
