Communicate with other players in Axis and Allies 1942 Online?
I created a group and a chat for players so that we can arrange games, discuss strategy, etc.. (it's called Axis and Allies 1942). But the real question is: Will the next patches allow players to communicate in the game?

We still don't have a definitive answer to that question. Presently, our only communication system is our map notes, which can be viewed only by other players on your alliance.

Nothing regarding chat is set in stone, but if we do move forward with some form of cross-faction communication, we want to do it right in a way that maintains and keeps Axis & Allies a fun and safe spot to play for all players.

Having played in a couple of communities using the Hasbro game, I can say I like not having to listen and respond (or not) to a lot of dice whining and complaining. More important, in-game chat creates a number of challenges to police what some people will call "friendly trash talk" and others will see as uncivil behavior. I think groups with public threads and chats, where uncivil behavior can be called out by a group instead of managed by a single opponent, are a better way to create community.

Same.

It's online comms. Players know that they may see something offensive, right? If players can shut comms off then it's fine, right? And if players don't want to shut it off and see something offensive, if they have a mute option then there's that.

As to out of game comms and groupthink - though I'm sure that last is not intended it *does* happen on some level inevitably - why mention it, in the context that we do have Steam threads and chat already? Are you saying that you find it reasonable that there be no chat in-game because you consider Steam sufficient? It's fine if you are saying that, I just want to understand.

Personally I'd say I don't think it really is. Steam isn't enough, Discord isn't enough, because players just aren't going to want to fire up another program to maybe be able to talk with other players if or if those other players happen to also be checking for comms.

If you look around the forums, you'll see players saying they take issue, and even offense, at reasonable in-game actions by other players. So you can see where an in-game chat could be useful in addressing such concerns.

Take a hypothetical player that wants to play an entire game in one or two sittings. They create a table, get players, and maybe play a round or two. Then someone leaves. It's reasonable that players leave. Even if a game name is titled "Play Entire Game Until End", some player may get hungry, or maybe fall asleep, or whatever thing.

So when that happens then what? If a player logged off, as I understand it apparently that can be detected now. But nobody knows why. Maybe the player went to get a meal and they turned off A&A so their sister (or whoever) could use the computer, maybe they had to take a brief videoconference call so had to shut down A&A for memory usage reasons, maybe they just called it a day.

And regardless, who knows when everyone may reconvene? Putting "Play Entire Game Until End Reconvene 1 PM UDT" won't fit in a game title right?

So - in-game comms. Maybe you wouldn't use them, but I think other players would. And I think it's reasonable and appropriate that there be in-game comms for a game like A&A.

I would certainly like to see some sort of communication in multiplayer. Even if there is not a full chat, maybe some sort of stock responses you could use.

Perhaps... "That's enough for me tonight" or "I can play a few rounds". Super frustrating waiting for the guy whose gone to bed.

maybe even a little razzing might be nice... "You got lucky, there" or perhaps "That hurt". Lighthearted responses, for when 3 of your bombers were wasted by AA and you wanna scream terrible thoughts.

Most of all, "GG". To those I have played and the developers of this wonderful game.

Exactly! I thought about it again and maybe you guys are right about keeping it less talkative but an easy option to tell your opponent you're leaving for the night would be a GREAT improvement! Waiting for somebody who's not coming back can be so frustrating :)

Very thoughtful reply and some good points. I was saying that I find Steam and AxisandAllies.org sufficient and would see ingame chat as creating distractions and hassle. I am playing entirely asynchronously ranked games and didn't realize there were many games happening synchronously. I can certainly see value in more communication about the circumstances for a game for players looking to play several turns or an entire game in one sitting. If ingame chat were created, I would be fine with a mute button that was visible to my opponent so they are not expecting responses.

Side note: I find 24 hour turn a vast improvement over the marathon games that would sometimes keep me up until 3am. Not that I couldn't ask for a continuance, but I play a much better game now and find the mid- and long-game more enjoyable because I can reflect on my options.

Another side note: my thanks to you for your very thoughtful posts on strategy. I feel fortunate to have read them as I got back into this game.

Communicay option is needed. If a player is leaving for 10 min or a couple hrs...nice to know. If abusive, chat can be turned off. Easy.

Considering that this thread is 4 years old, I don't like our chances.

I want communications too! Trash talking is one of my best skills! "You will be swimming in your blood."
tgajr74 May 27, 2024 @ 6:47pm
Communication also helps new people ask for help and learn how to play the game better.

Ive chatted with my opponents through Discord a few times and it was a wonderful experience. Very cordial, and I learned some great tips.

It's not the same as communicating withing the game. Like Panzer Corps
