While you're correct that the dice can be a deciding factor, it's not even close how much more important strategy is. Or even better is not making mistakes with your troops. I tend to lose more games to bad/forgetful troop movements and non-movements than anything else.
After Germany's turn, there are only Axis subs left in the Atlantic.
I wish I could share your optimism. The game has been consistently frustrating for me that I just forfeit of late. The steam roll strategy with swing rolls against me. Its been punitive experience over several games. Yet, I keep holding out that it'll change verses other players. The single game vs UI, it's just different and not because the UI doesn't play well.
Taking a break is the right move. When games aren't fun, then why play? It's like playing Craps in Vegas - after 10+ 7-outs, then it's time to go to a show; that is, if your wallet has anything left. :)
