and then reading all this depressed me even more.
Because it's simply too real.
I so glad a GameDev took the time and effort and risk to create this.
It's a lesson everyone should hear, to really treasure and appreciate the little is left...
To offset the adverse affects of radiation, it should be noted that mange (one of the primary death factors for foxes) is likely extinct due to low population density, as well as rabies, and humans are likely to leave them alone given their location.
Is their survival guaranteed? No, of course not. But they certainly have a good chance. Remember that the Red Fox is the most adaptable carnivore on the planet, capable of surviving the tundras of Canada and Russia to the harsh heat of the Australian continent.
I saw mother and baby badger hanging from a pole outside of one of the houses in the game...so I don't think so :(

Kyle Hill did a video on the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone last year or so and he even did an entire episode on the dogs themselves. Turns out the dogs are totally fine! They're Hella radioactive and might come with some problems, but the dogs themselves are... otherwise totally fine. The fox pups will have ample food and safety from humans, taken care of by other animals. I'm sure the red fox as we know it will probably die off - but a new race of foxes/canids will arise from their life in the new Zone.
It's inspiring, actually, that the mother fox may not have made it to the end, but brought her cubs there to thrive and be safe.
