Uses the classical linear missions progression, and the SR Point system for some added challenge... still easy compared to the older titles, but fun
SRW V, X, and T are all good, and in English. If you're interested in Space Battleship Yamato, get V, because the Yamato is a central part of its plot. The multiple world aspect of it is also pretty well done, and it's the last game of the core series so far (not counting the mobile game, SRWDD) to have multiple parallel Earths as part of its plot premise.
If you have any nostalgia for Wataru, X is heavily focused on it.
T has a little bit of everything - the isekai aspect from Rayearth and Dunbine, some surprising non-mecha entries in Harlock and Cowboy Bebop, and the return of GUN x SWORD, GaoGaiGar and G Gundam was pretty hype
Other than that, if you don't mind the language barrier, I'd recommend the entire SRW Alpha series!
Also, don't bother picking OG MD. This game completly drained any desire I had to play SRW for a long while. The copy pasted lamalice (generic filler enemy) missions, awful main mecha design and lack of any sense of progression hit really hard in that one.
I would stay away from V if I were you.
It does have an interesting story to it, but both its Male and Female MCs are cringe worthy. Soji is your typical tactless boar who doesn't know squat about women and how to "properly" talk to them. And Chitose just yells slüt with how she wears her "uniform". I'm sorry, but if you wear your uniform unzipped with your huge gozzungas brazenly showing, it really means slüt in my eyes. At least another important female character has the decency to dress up like an Emo "Chi" from Chobits and if you know what Chobits is then you'll know what I mean. And to be frank she truly IS somewhat of a Chobits "Chi" too, and you'll learn why as the game's story progresses.
The Alpha trilogy + Gaiden.
