Essential anime?
Of all the animes present in this game I have only watched code geass, and only the anime, not the movies. I am in process of watching the original gundam. I am going to understand anything about the backstory of the game or should I wait until I have seen more animes?

Its easy to follow. All the new series to the franchise stories are walked through, the rest of the older anime are used as props mostly to support the stories from the anime they are focusing on. And the exposition is abundant. There are also in game librarys you can read for the rest.

There is no anime required to watch in order to enjoy the story of Super Robot Wars. The game covers everything you'd need to know, and a lot of it is fan-fiction tier writing to bring it all together anyways.

If you just want to know what anime from this game are worth watching, I'm not the one to ask, because I am not a fan of most of them. :UNMASKEDMETALSLIME:

Prior knowledge of the shows not required, but can help understanding the dialogue better if you know exactly what they are referring to without looking up the in-game encyclopedia. You can always just pick a couple shows most interested you to watch. Watching everything can ruin the element of surprise at times. So it is not a bad place to be just knowing a few shows, but follow the game's story without always knowing what will happen next.

pretty much of Knight's & Magic and Majestic Prince both of their anime and in super robot are lacking as Knight's & Magic removed 3 characters that had different mecha and story in game isn't really their, with Majestic Prince some story plots are their but they didn't really add much to their mecha aka weapons to gold 4 and 3 rose.

Not essential, but watch Gundam Iron Blood Orphans. It's standalone, so you don't need any gundam lore context. And it's friggen bloody. No holds-barred HBO style gundam show. It's probably one of my top gundam series.

I feel the GaoGaiGar vs Betterman parts and some of the J-Decker stuff loses a lot of impact if you haven't seen GaoGaiGai and GGG FINAL, since this essentially gives some closure on a really rough pseudo-cliffhanger that's been sitting idle for like 15 years. I'm rather biased, though, GGG is what pulled me into super robots to begin with.

+1

Also mature plot line and has many scenes "victory" scenarios that make you feel like ♥♥♥♥ even though they won. It's grounded w/o heroics.
