Issues with the game
When I take screenshots, they turn black.
Additionally, I can't access most of the game's settings (until after 5 minutes of cutscenes, battle prep, in-game dialogue, and the start of mission 1's first player phase)

I've heard that both are done on purpose, is that true?
----------

I'll admit, those issues left me with a bad taste in my mouth about this game.

It must be.

For some reason they forgot to do it with SD GG Crossrays (on Steam at least), but the Switch-versions of SRW and SD GG Genesis have the same issue (after the first two or so hours of gametime).

Keep in mind you can still use any means other then Steam to take Screenshots. As for the other issue I just dont see a reason for a few minutes of Game Play before you can tweak settings to be an problem, but thats just me. Other then that I hope you enjoy the Game, welcome to :SRW30_logo:.

Forgot to do what?
You can't take screenshots on the Switch version?

Eh... between the settings messup, seriously clumsy and clunky interface, slow gameplay (I guess Fire Emblem and Langrisser spoiled me?), and inability to take screenshots and post them here (for literally no reason besides Bandai-Namco being paranoid morons)...
...plus an unusually large amount of forms and consent to give data, more than most companies have. (Which also gives the thinly-veiled threat that any form of modding will result in bans at best or legal action at worst)...

... In general, the game left a bad taste in my mouth.
I gave it 30 minutes to try and impress me, and honestly, by the time the first mission ended, it failed.
So, yeah, sadly, I'm out.
(I only knew two series in this game, anyways. I was never going to recognize any of the characters besides Amuro and Lelouch)

The screenshots were especially what disappointed me.
The fact that I can't show changing AZ's last name to "Backwards" or her birthday as 4/20 is just disappointing.
And the fact it moves so slow that it took 30 minutes to finish the first mission.

Well I guess sorry you had issues with so many tiny little things that had almost nothing to do with the game itself. The only real issue I could find was that it is slow, and yes unless you skip all the Animations its a slow game. Part of the reason why most SRW Fans play it for the crazy Attack Animations. So basically its just not a game for you, but its what the Fans like. Hope you can find something that can enjoy thats more to your taste.

In these kinds of tactical mecha RPG, you mostly watch the animations to check for unique dialogue, check out a new mecha's attack, or just because you love seeing your favorite mecha overkill stuff.

The graphics were nice and all, but not as much fun when you've got a 2-hour window and are trying to see if the game's issues will get fixed (or if the upsides are worth this issues).

Besides, I'm usually the type to skip long battle animations anyways (time is money, after all). In FE and Langrisser and so on, I usually have my finger holding down the fast-forward button.

Looking back, maybe I should have reconsidered the refund. Maybe.
But, I'm rather harsh in my judgments of games.
For a long-running company like Namco, they really should have known better, this game should have been well-polished and streamlined.
(And not setting off a ton of red flags)
--------

(While it's not one of my reasons for downvoting this, I also hate that the tutorial wastes time with basic control nonsense ("move towards enemies, then select Attack") that is standard in most SRPGs...
...but never says a word about the weird stuff this game does (Like what "Spirit" is, or "Supporter", or "Ex Action", or anything besides Move and Attack. )
(Also, wow, Az's mech is kinda pitiful if her big awesome spinning disk attack only does 3/4 damage to a standard mook)

Me: "So, big awesome battleship that just launched from the Gundam-esque space colony thingie, do you have cannons or guns to help fight with?"
Discount White Base: "Nope. We have no weapons to shoot mechs with at all."
Me: "... then what use are you to me? I'm surrounded, and all I've got are cheerleaders in the big imposing battleship with zero weapons?"
------------

I think Bandai-Namco might have banked a little too much on long-time anime mecha fans, and should have given a little more thought about newcomers.

Such as, I'm sure that when Uso showed up in the first space mission, fans rejoiced.
But to me, my first thought was "Okay, whoever this little brat is better make himself useful, I'm getting swamped! ...Judging by the Haro toy, I'm guessing he's a Gundam character, and likely someone I'm supposed to know?"

Really? How?
And even then, surely I can't upload it here using that?

(And what on this green earth is Namco's problem anyways? Are they that paranoid about screenshots and spoilers? What conceivable reason did they have for locking you out of screenshots?
I'm actually scared to ask, but did they also rig this to not work on Twitch or Youtube streams?)

Windows print screen.
Look at screenshots. People do it all the time.
Added benefit of no watermark.

But I wouldn't be able to upload it to Steam, right?

Seems to happen? I've never tried it cause it is so irrelevant to me. But its just a file. You can always drag and drop em to steam if required.
I bet there is a browse option.

You can upload screenshots in the Steam-community even if they're not taken with the Steam-overlay. It's just less convenient that way.

Really?
I'd love to know that trick.

Especially as a couple of my games here don't have Steam-overlay (they were both made with RPG Maker XP, which doesn't allow for Steam overlay or integration), I never could upload the screenshots.
------

As for Super Robot Wars 30, eh, who know, next sale I may give it a second chance.
I have done that before.
(Granted, the one game I did give a second chance to (Empyrion) blew it even more so, and fully deserved it's negative review by me.
But SRW30 doesn't have the issues (nor shady devs) that plagued that game.)

But man, this game was not exactly newcomer friendly.
(Between not know who in the blazes most of the characters are (whom presumably players will all start off knowing), to not knowing what these extra things in-game are (like spirit, ex action, what the battleship even does besides being a big target, etc.)
-----------

I will ask out of curiosity: Out of the characters I encountered in the path that starts in space (the Gundam-heavy path, I presume), how many of the characters shown are Original Characters, and how many were from the various series?
(Besides Az Sainklaus Backwards. I'm fairly sure her and Edge are originals.)

There is a menu that explains all the gameplay bits. It's just that the game's integration of that info is a bit weird, basically asking you in early missions if you want to have stuff explained that you should've probably already figured out 2 missions ago.

Whenever anyone is talking, you can hit an info button ("X" on a Xbox controller, I think 1 or 2 on a keyboard) which will bring up that character's profile. Said profile lists the series the character is from. Anyone with "Super Robot Wars OG" is an original character.

Though to make a long story short: If it's neither the main character nor a crew member of the Dreistrager, they're probably from some anime.

Alright I'm gona go ahead and say this game is THE MOST newcomer friendly this series has EVER been. And by leaps and bounds. They give you a massive menu to go through nearly every command and bit of data in the game that ACTUALLY tells you what it all does, something they never did before. Not to mention the first 3-4 stages act as actual tutorials asking you at the start if you need to learn a new thing or already understand it. I guess you didn't find this menu when you were looking around in the options during the first stage.

Also for a lot of these shows, not all but a lot, their plot unfolds AS you play so that you learn most of the characters as you go along with the ability to pull up info as someone mentioned before with profiles and events that have already happened so you can catch on quick. It's this method that made me fall in love with certain shows and characters in the past and why I look forward to each game now.
