I'd suggest (much as I would like to have something like this) waiting until such time as either ToastieLabs stops making any more DLC, or they approach you (or build their own) to release the tool as a DLC here...
Im ok with them wanting to make some money (i dont think making of game cost them much, because game and its code felt like hobby project), but absence of such important feature make game much less enjoyable (i bet they have their own converter), so i still think i will release my converter (Its open source btw) 1 week after they release DLC. Unless they would make their own converter as second DLC.
We once again stress that we do not want you to not release this converter, as this will directly impact the amount of sales of these DLC packs.
The reason why it is so easy to create your own converter is because we had planned for this as an eventuality: once we had released all of our DLC packs, we wanted to release a converter to ensure users of the game could continue to enjoy it by adding their own images.
Be aware that due to a certain bug that have arisen with our use of file directories for the game, we will be implementing a change to the file structure and making the levels hardcoded into the game. This would obviously mean that your converter will not function with the new format. This was a game breaking bug that needed to be fixed, regardless of this thread.
We appreciate the time and effort you have put into making a converter.
In my last effort to convice you, i will provide some opinion from my point of view:
1)Converter is a must have thing for such types of games (and should've been there from day1)
2)Not many people browse Steam Guides or Discussions, so amount of people who knows about it becomes much smaller
3)Even if they download my Converter, they still need to modify picture to have 99 or less colors (using Photoshop, paint.net, etc...), because of that, even less people will use it
4)If you want to have money from your game, you should've had "Buy us a coffee" DLC from the very beginning (many people are willing to buy such "DLC" just to support game they like)
5)I will put MANDATORY unskippable 5 second message at every start of my Converter, about "supporting Devs"
6)As you stated above, you are planning hardcode images into the game, so my Converter wont be useful after that.
These are my opinions on current situations and i hope you understand my point.
I also made a poll to try and convince you even more: https://www.strawpoll.me/16413115
P.S.
I really liked your game, so please, keep on developing it, and thank you for taking your time to read this.
It's probably best to keep that mod to yourself for now. They have stated in a understandable way that they don't want you to release it, and that should be respected. A converter is a must for the games longevity and it's nice to see that you care for the game, but this should be released from the dev team. It's expensive making games even if it seems like a "10 hour job".
If this developer wants your help they now know how to ask you. Im ONLY interested in the developers game and not some mod converter.
Its very nice that you care and feel your doing something good here, the developer did clearly asked you not to release such a converter you have made. Please let these developers do it for them selfs and they can ask you later if feel they need to ok.
Developers also need to earn some kind of living to pay thier bills and feed thier familys for our enertainment and fun. I support these developers and love this game its fantastic. I hope to see lots more from them in the future.
Please dont disrespect the developers wishes ok.
Pretty sure this isn't your place to argue or negotiate, Psycho. You are also literally arguing to undermine them until they release the converter. You should work on your negotiation skills. It reeks of hostility.
Literally, the developer asked you not to, and shots were fired with your 'opinions.' Keep in mind, your opinions do not matter. I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up with some type of ban, or even a Cease and Desist.
Personally I won't be using a 3rd party program since it won't come with achievements. I enjoy painting the pictures but I also enjoy getting achievements for doing so. I'll purchase every dlc pack that comes with them. Yep, I'm that guy :)
Even so, while I'm no expert in legal matters, I suspect the devs have no control over what he does or doesn't do with his free time so long as he isn't directly violating Copyright. A cease and desist? Are you effing kidding? I sorta support the devs here too, but they literally have no control over what he does with his own program. They can ask politely as they have done, and he can go along with what they want if he wishes. That's as far as it goes. What he does isn't your business, or mine, or really anyone but his.
If he does release his program, you certainly have the right not to use it.
To the Devs: Thanks for the program. And the new DLC :) Keep em comin'!
P.S. I did not expect to get so much negativity from regular players... Usually mods/3rd party improvements for games are welcome... but not here apparently.
