While Project Wingman probably isn't the best Ace Combat–style game available, especially as Ace Combat 7 easily accessible.
If you're already acquainted with the genre, I can fully recommend it.

The flight model in Project Wingman is smooth, polished, and satisfying. However, a key departure from the Ace Combat series lies in the aircraft differentiation. Unlike Ace Combat 4, where progression takes you from the sluggish F-4 to the nimble F-22 and by the end you are the boss fight, here the difference between flying an F-14 and a prototype aircraft is minimal.

On the plus side, this means nearly any aircraft is viable for completing the game. That’s especially helpful given that Prez (your WSO) can only fly in the F-14 at best, with all future aircraft being a single-seasters. Still in this matter its a pitty devs didn't went with some better aircraft, like making the prototype F-15 two-seater, especially when real life F-15EX is. On the downside, this lack of strong differences flattens progression in the game. In you are already experienced with the genre, you might find the progression lacking or straight up on existent.

One standout feature is the flexible loadout system. Unlike Ace Combat, which limits you to one primary and one special weapon, Project Wingman allows you to equip up to four weapons in any combination. This adds a lot of strategic variety and synergizes nicely with the relatively uniform aircraft performance, making almost any setup viable.

That said, I personally found myself mostly relying on unguided bombs and AA missiles. They simply covered most mission requirements effectively. And constantly switching camera modes to deliver accurate strikes in first person is fun.

The story is passable and clearly inspired by Ace Combat Zero. If you’re a fan of Zero’s tone — multiple enemy squadrons, orange accents, and a slightly unhinged boss with a railgun/laser and an ability to spawn explosions mid-air — you’ll feel right at home here.

Still, even a rushed AC Zero had more emotional weight and character depth. In Project Wingman, the abundance of superweapons makes their use feel less special. As narrative dressing for the gameplay, it works well enough — but as someone whoes favorite entry is Ace Combat 5, this story didn’t come up with anything special.

Mission design is solid across the board. While not as varied or ambitious as the main Ace Combat series, there are some standout moments. Like in AC6 and AC7, missions are significantly longer than in the PS2-era titles, which generally works to the game's benefit.

It doesn’t reach the creativity of AC5, but playing it safe might’ve been the right call here. Most missions follow the typical air-ground combined format. Still, the developers show real promise in Frontline-59 DLC, they clearly can think outside the box. I’d love to see more like it in the future.

One downside is the lack of mid-mission checkpoints.

Firstly as the missions are quite long if you die during a boss fight, you might have to redo 15 minutes of generic air combat. In older games with shorter missions, this wasn’t an issue, but here it can be frustrating — particularly for new players. The tunnel run followed by a difficult ground attack in Frontline-59 is a good example of a spike that could trip up less seasoned players.

Another thing is that game loves unpredictable mid-mission updates — you often don’t know whether you’ve reached the final wave or another phase is coming.
You have no idea on first run whether to use your special weapons now or save them not knowing if you are 1 minute or 15 minutes from the end.
It's not like you can run out of ammunition - the numbber of standard missiles is ridiculously high and aircraft gun is really potent.
But It would have been nicer if at least some missions were predictable.


A fantastic addition is the roguelike-style Conquest Mode. This type of mode is sorely missing from the Ace Combat series, and I’m glad it’s included here. It’s perfect for quick play sessions—jump in, shoot some enemies, and jump out.

Coming from Vector Thrust (a broken but ambitious game), I really appreciated this feature. AC7 could’ve really used something like it.

The game runs well on my AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, and I imagine it’ll perform fine on any modern hardware. I only encountered a couple of issues:

Cloud settings caused visual artifacts near the screen edges (likely specific to my setup).

The camera sway effect (similar to Ace Combat: Horizon) was distracting but thankfully toggleable.

The UI scale is poorly optimized—some text is needlessly small, particularly on devices like the 7-inch ROG Ally screen.

If you’re looking for a solid Ace Combat–like experience, Project Wingman is a great pick. It nails the fundamentals and adds a few nice innovations of its own. However, if you’ve never played this genre before, I’d recommend starting with Ace Combat 7 and coming back to Project Wingman afterward.

a slightly less scaled Ace Combat game with like 10x the pathos. probably the best love letter to a franchise I've ever gotten a chance to interact with. you can even carry multilpe special weapons!
