So what's Crimson's problem, anyway? (spoiler alert)
Finally finished the campaign. I've seen more people say this game is super deep philosophically, but to be honest... I'm not seeing it.

I mean, I'm Monarch, right? I'm a Merc. I kill for money. I don't talk, I don't voice any strong opinions, I don't represent any ideas beyond "I fly and blow stuff up for money". I don't see how you can have a proper "rival" for a non-character like that, a proper "opposite". After all, what's the opposite of nothing? Either way, Crimson 1 certainly doesn't appear to be it.

If anything, Crimson's whole personality and demeanor has more in common with Scream and Rage from AC7's special missions than, say, Mihaly. Unlike Mihaly, who is a stone cold professional who cares only about flying and being the top dog in the sky (much like the player, I might add), Crimson seems positively unhinged. His "arguments" make no sense whatsoever. He's the kind of maniac that would put a gun to your friend's head, pull the trigger, and then go "look what you made me do!". He does this by nuking Presidia, the capital of his own home country, and then blaming you. Just think about this: the entire "rivalry" between Monarch and Crimson exists purely in Crimson's head. Monarch never spoke a single word to him, Crimson is just another red blip on his radar that needs to go. But for some reason, in Crimson's head, there's this epic "duality" here, a "fight for Cascadia's soul". Guy's delusional.

Honestly, that ending was so beautiful audiovisually (the music, that shot of his plane falling from the sky, his final line, finally the explosion) that it was a shame he was such a sh*tty villain because I honestly couldn't feel any sympathy for him (even though the game clearly wants you to). I was more like, "great, he's dead. Now pay me so we can move on." I just wish Crimson was a bit more... "coherent" in his thinking, sympathetic in his motives, so I'd actually feel bad for killing him. But instead of a great villain, he's just another mook, flying a cool plane, suffering from delusions of grandeur.

NOTE: before typing hateful messages - I finished the game twice now, I'm enjoying it a lot and I will be sure to purchase any and all PW/AC games going forward. Don't come @ me for being a "hater" because I'm not

His ego, illusion, and his trauma of losing a lot of his men because of single pilot.

I enjoy him as an over the top, unhinged antagonist, but I've seen some people do a decent job connecting some dots to show a bit of his tragedy in the conflict. I can't dig up whatever I'm remembering and I'm not going to bother paraphrasing, but If I squint hard enough, I can muster a few ounces of pity for C1.

Crimson originally wanted to best Monarch for the sake of him being a Peacekeeper. The Peacekeepers are the best pilots in the sky. They're called upon when their country needs them to absolutely pacify an area. They're the best of the best. The top dogs. The ones their men rely on. When they show up, their army breathes a sigh of relief. The battle is theirs.

And then comes along Monarch. Some rando ass mercenary from the periphery that got hired by a nation for a wad of cash and nothing else. This one pilot is running rampant across the front line smashing attack after attack after attack. Wrecking through their airforce, destroying their ground troops, bombing their refineries. So the peacekeepers come. Crimson comes. You need to die and they're gonna do it, as they always have. First battle, they get the upper hand and you run. Just like they thought. But you're still alive and Crimson sees you as his enemy counterpart. Someone who's so good that their team relies on them almost solely. So they fight you again... and you win. Not only do you win, you kill some of his squadron. His family. His friends. And then it becomes more than just "you're a rival pilot". The war has finally hit him. The Peacekeepers aren't not invincible anymore. It wasn't a massive attack. It wasn't an entire military gunning for them. It was you. One pilot. One random ass mercenary pilot. The people they made fun of for being hired to help a nation that couldn't win their own battles. One pilot wrecked the peacekeepers. His squadron got dismantled by one person and no matter what his side did, no matter what HE did, they couldn't stop you.

So he snapped. Fine, if I can't beat you; if my TEAM can't beat you; if my whole military and country can't beat you, then I'll just kill everyone. So he fires a bunch of cortium primed warheads at Presidia and reactivates the ring of fire in an attempt to bring about the end of the world again. Because after all, as long as you die.

You fight again, you dismantle what's left of the peacekeepers and all that's left is him. He has nothing left, no reason to live. His squadron is gone, his country is beaten, his pride has been shattered, all by one random, no name, mercenary pilot from the periphery. His only point of living now is making sure you die for what you did.

I didn't mind the story, honestly. The "kill everything for the sake of revenge" angle is a little cop-out ish, but I accepted it.

It's heavily implied that Monarch has much more to his backstory than just a random wandering mercenary out to make a few million $$$ and retire. It's been a while since I played the story campaign but I'm pretty sure the fact that the enemy may have learned Monarch's true identity along with those of the other merc pilots is presented as a big deal. So I got the impression that Crimson is the one making it a personal vendetta for his own unrevealed reasons, whereas Monarch doesn't care about Crimson beyond the normal respect given to a skilled opponent.

You're a dumbass, ego doesn't correlate with penis size. It's a "le funny harmless joke" ain't it, body shaming is fine if it's against men right?
