how is the story narrative done?
I like narrated flying shooters like Descent Freespace 2, Ace Combat etc. W/o spoilers, how is story told in PWM? Cutscenes, briefings, in-game dialogue?

I got no idea what's going on, but it's super fun.

Briefing & in-game dialog/radio.

There technically aren't any cutscenes. You'll have a general idea through the brief, debrief and in-game dialogue. However, a large potion of the lore is in a menu labled "files" or something. You'll see it before starting a mission and you'll unlock more of the lore as you progress through the game.

Does the solution work?

If story is important for you, then I would say it's properly a bit boring.

Freespace 1/2 had a really thought provoking story despite mainly being told through animated monologues. I haven't seen that quality of story in any action flying games again.

A mix of briefings and in game voicelines are how the story is told. It feels very natural.

Most of the story will be told through Briefings and De-Briefings between missions. They do a good job of establishing the setting and timeline as a whole. Most of the characterizations however will be through in-game dialogue where the different personalities of the different characters are established an developed.

There are also optional "files" that are unlocked as you progress through the campaign. you can read them to learn even more about the characters and the world that are not explicitly stated during gameplay

Word to the wise, the characters are very interesting and the dialogue is well written but this game can be very hectic as an arcade flight sim and action is generally n-stop so I recommend playing on a lower difficulty to best enjoy the story

Yes. Few games are able to reach that level of storytelling.

Thats no problem, i played Ace Combat on japanese with english subtitles and could follow the story well enough. My secret is failing at missions. Repeating same dialogue comes naturally.
