did this game get gutted?
tl;dr, I've been following this game for a while but i haven't bought it yet. yesterday it showed up on Xbox Game Pass for PC. 2 things I've noticed. 1st the file size is only 5.32 gb despite the steam version saying it needs more, and 2nd there is no obvious way to launch it in VR which is the main reason for me wanting the game in the first place.

Did the Microsoft Store version get gutted? Am i being screwed?

Steam tells me that my install is 13.23 gb. I don't know anything about VR but even if they removed it (why?) then I doubt that'd cut the filesize down by nearly 8gb. Weird stuff.

Confirmed 13.23 gb. You are playing on a console. So they would have to dumb the graphics down to make that work. That might be why. I had 7 days to die on pc. Then bought it on Xbox one . Was a very very diffrent to the pc version. As far as how it looked and operated.

"Xbox Game Pass for PC."

The game isn't on console, It's on game pass for PC.

My guess is, the VR was removed from the Microsoft Store version. I have seen a similar case with No Mans Sky.

Note: This is for the PC Microsoft Store version, not a console version. Project Wingman was released 2 days ago on said store.

No Man's Sky on gamepass supports vr though, it prompts you if you want to run that version right after you launch it and I think it uses openxr, so it will go through steamvr if that's the way your system is configured.

I'm not sure if the gamepass version is stripped down, it's weird that it's smaller but maybe the installation is compressed in some way? I don't know how the delivery system of gamepass/windows store works other than at some level it's probably making an appxupload. But for now it definitely doesn't seem to have a way to launch into vr which may just be a matter of command line parameters or something.

Interesting... This might have been added after I tried it last time because I can't recall such an option on NMS.
It could be indeed a question of command line parameters for Project Wingman.

okay so after some digging around in the files ive got some news. the version on the microsoft store is an Xbox version of the game. the game is using a .pak file instead of a .exe file. Pak files are Xbox executables and can run on newer versions of windows via the built in emulation stuff in game pass. normally this only happens when a console game is ported to PC via game pass, however it seems to be the opposite case here.

Also apparently the an entire game mode is missing. as well as seemingly missing or downgraded textures across the board. this along with some file compression account for the file size compression as well as the seeming lack of updates to the steam version.

My best guess is that we can expect to see a project wingman release on Xbox sometime later this year, probably around the end of October or some time in November.

Gamepass games often get chopped, features like VR are the first to go, followed by any ability to accept mods. But if you're playing on Gamepass, you wouldn't even care. Some games on the other hand, have zero actual difference like say, Alien Isolation.
