its like just doing rift. i see a curved screen in front of me with the game menu at a weird angle. NOT vr.

The menus don't have 360 environments to look around, just a window that houses all the selections. Get into a level and you'll have a cockpit view with head tracking, the ability to lean around inside of (and through) the canopy, rendering the game in every pixel of your face's display.

You seem very confused about things, so I'll add, you can not play the game with VR controllers. You need to include a regular gamepad, M/KB, or a flight stick to handle everything other than look around. This was noted on the store page if you missed it.

i have an xbone controller. how do i get the menu to be front and center?

Click the right stick to center your view, or press C/V on your keyboard.

It puts the menu/nose of your aircraft at the center of your current view. Don't remove your headset, set it down, press the button then get back into VR. Have your Xbone controller in hand while in VR, sit comfortably looking straight ahead, then click the stick.

clicking right stick on xbone or oculus does nothing. menu is still stuck far away down and to the right

Launch the game in desktop and confirm your controller is detected etc. Or just confirm that C or V on your keyboard can reset your camera. Check your keybindings that "change camera" or whatever the exact name was is synced up with your right stick click.

Also put down your oculus controllers, they do nothing in game.

ok got it working. the trick is to launch rift in oculus then launch steam there as opposed to the virtual desktop.
this game is GREAT in VR!
