(Quest 2) - First VR Impressions
Ace combat veteran here, played every game including the PSP ones.
System specs: i7 2600 @ 4.4ghz, 16GB ram, 3080 Trio X, Samsung 840 Pro

Played the 1st 2 missions without VR, then with. I have a Quest 2. Which i normally use with virtual desktop to play wirelessly. Works fine until the you need to select an aircraft, and then it's a giant yellow/white smear and you can't escape out of it no matter what buttons you press. Only option is to force-quit. I did a reboot of the system but to no avail.

Using Oculus link (and thus tethered) was the only way to get about fixing that.

Once in the game, flying an F4, things initially are good. Head tracking works nicely, the graphics hold up. The "3D" effect is quite nice when you look around the big chunk of electronics infront of you that's in the F4 cockpit. Any 3rd person perspectives are shut out, so you can't track missiles/bombs to their target nor switch to outside view. This is the way.

Now the bad. For a game that's and i quote "From the ground made up for VR" I really don't notice that at all.

1. There is no in-game pilot model like Squadrons. Despite that. Your flight stick doesn't even move at all. So when you constantly see it in your periphery vision it's static and that's "disturbing" as it just looks off.

And no, sadly your cockpit isn't "functional" like it's in Squadrons or Elite Dangerous either. Hence it's a big statement to say "Developed for VR from the ground up"

2. Calling the big radar overlay blasts you in the face with a giant square that's super-imposed "above" everything else and is extremely hard to look at/focus on with your eyes. Re-centering doesn't fix this.

3. Any text dialogue is super hard to read. It's like the 3D for those is "off" - again re-centering doesn't fix that.

4. Gun-lead is 99% of the time all the way in the pilot's crotch (i.e way way below the cockpit model. When tracking targets mid-flight for a gun kill. I always have to eyeball it manually, you can't rely on it at all and it's not accurate.

5. Landing sequence at the end of mission 2, that text that describes the landing procedure just remains blasted in your face and is very distracting. I literally almost missed seeing the runway!

6. For the love of god, can the menu's be made to navigate with just your method of input instead of having to use your head as a mouse cursor ? This is incredibly annoying. For a lot of options i had to do a lot of exxegerated moves with my head and it's not the most precise thing.
I wanted to set the render slider back from 150% i had it at non VR to 100% for VR and .. yeah that was very very awkward. And so is just going through the plane loadout menu.

Other games i played have this right where i can just use whatever input i was using (project cars 2, Squadrons etc.) and it's just a static menu as it was normally without VR.

There are some HUD resize options in the menu. Take note that i haven't tried those yet.
I merely had 30 mins for a quick gaming session before bed-time. i jumped straight in.

Tomorrow will definitely give the menu options a try and update the thread.

Gave it another go. I tried adjusting the VR HUD size slider - but this literally didn't change anything (that i could notice anyway) during "Free flight"

My issue with the game is that anything HUD related is like it's 2D? I can see them sharply when I close one eye. But with both eyes, open and playing the game as you normally would. You are constantly visually distracted by the HUD being out of focus in your field of view. This is extremely annoying, to say the least.

Changing around some other options i couldn't get this fixed. As far as this is concerned for me. Rather unplayable in VR sadly. Haven't encountered this issue in other games I tried in VR (ED/Squadrons/Project Cars2) - so nothing wrong with my eyes :-)
