Duckside game developer is tinyBuild Riga studio.
Both studios are independent from each other and are part of the tinyBuild family.
Despite the fact that Duckside is technically based on Deadside, it is a completely different game with its own unique gameplay. You can try the game for free during the current playtest, based on my own experience it's quite fun.
Have the Deadside Devs checked it out? I haven't played it but watched a couple of video's on it. The crafting is something that makes it attractive. It would be nice to see the Devs expand on the crafting aspects of the game like Duckside. I would rather see more improvements to that part of the game then say weapons and POI's.
All though Duckside does look fun, I can't see myself getting immersed in it like I do with Deadside.
Yes, some developers have even tried this. Both studios are in contact on various subjects, so I think it's a mutually beneficial interaction.
So when are we getting gliders or planes in Deadside?
They knew this, why do you think they didn't open up as many servers for dockside, as they have for deadside? Because they knew the gimmick of it was enough to make profit, but not enough to spend money on extra servers. It's a business decision, and they made a good one.
To answer OP. YES, it's a resin, but no, it's not illegal, as they have rights to the game deadside, as it states on the game page, they helped make deadside.
For anyone else, that just wants a review, it's a good game, if you like the duck part, and flying, try or buy it. If you like the gameplay, go buy deadside, it's been out longer, is EXACTLY the same game other than small details, and is more developed, with more in game stuff to do.
