What is it with building bases in this game?

I've come across a few shacks and one smallish base in game that are locked.
I'd really like to try and do it but, how do people go about it and are they doing much of it?
The reason I ask is because I think I need the largest backpack and it's a little bit expensive.

check ur crafting inventory, put down a land claim somewhere, you can see all the stuff you need, get an axe and hit trees. get logs, make planks, make beams, etc.
pretty self explanatory once you start it. people can raid you pretty easy tho

My axe doesn't work!
I've got the fire axe and it won't cut down any trees for some very strange reason.

they dont fall, they just drop wood. dont do it in the safezone tho it doesnt work. only outside safezone. i built my base with a tree inside so i can chop in safety :D

To build a base, you need three tools: The hammer, the saw, and an ax. (Not the circular saw, that's currently only got a use as a trade good with high money value.) Pick a land claim, chop a tree with an ax and you will get logs. With the saw in your inventory, you can craft wood planks, from which you can craft beams and plywood. Lay a Scaffold in the size you like and then you can attach walls, doors, and floors. You can also build defensive base walls that don't require a Scaffold. Your base door will be locked to everyone not in your Squad (including everyone you were on a Squad with when you log out--let your friends out of the door and close it before you log out!) You can put storage containers in your base to store your things and keep them safe (small containers you just need wood and nails, large ones require the hammer.) Keep in mind that in some cases if you place a container too close to an exterior wall it may glitch and allow people outside to open and access the container (and steal the things inside.)

Yes. Long way from a safe zone.

I thought maybe I have the wrong axe? Though it would be strange. I have the red and yellow fire axe.

Splatterguts: Did you have space in your inventory? If you don't, no wood will drop. Also make sure you're hearing the sound when you hit the tree--sometimes you have to stand just right.

I'm not sure to be honest.
I didn't get a message telling me my inventory was full. I'm still unsure if it was the trees or maybe a dodgy axe.
Some trees are still floating a little off ground and maybe they won't give wood.

But I have a shack built.....which is a learning curve of itself. But I'm happy.
