We don't own the games we buy.
This is not a deadsied thing, it's the general trend.
Renting servers is a source to make cash. And that's the was it works: Somebody wants cash, the find a way to make cash, they do it.
You can't grab money from people if they own what they want to have.
What you're referring to is "Live Service" games. It became very relevant, with battle royale games like H1Z1, Fortnite, APEX and other FPS genres like CS and COD. It has since risen in popularity in newer games that have regularly cycling events and updated digital merchandise alongside these events. Yes, it is a plague! However, these games are particularly designed to generate revenue from the purchases of added content, like DLCs or in-game loot boxes and skins; something Deadside doesn't do.
While these games are available on Steam, the majority of games available on Steam, including Deadside, actually do not fall into the Live Service category. In fact, the vast majority of FPS games similar to Deadside have files available for dedicated server; all the reason why they should be available for this game too. The Live Service type of thing is mostly attributed to consoles, where a lot of content is/has been moving towards fully streaming instead of physical/downloaded content. In theory, this could happen with Steam (you can already stream games from your library across computers, or through GeForce Now) but isn't being pushed heavily in the PC gaming platform, especially not Steam.
It does appear this trend has peaked and reached a plateau end of 2024 in the gaming industry. Many publishers (including AAA studios) still trying this trend with games in the last quarter (unless it's a major and anticipated title) have significantly failed immediately after launch, losing hundreds of millions in work.
Secondly, unless Bad Pixel or a parent company has specifically made an agreement to receive a percentage of revenue from G-Portal (unable to find any concrete public information on this and G-Portal themselves claim it does not receive revenue from publishers for hosting their games) then it's likely not the reason why dedicated server files are not available. It's likely due to keeping certain information about the game private while still in development, or from being exploited to cheat or bypass anti-cheat on official servers. However, I wish we'd get an actual answer from Bad Pixel instead of being ignored completely!
Alex the CEO said it's because it opens it up to hackers on discord a few days ago. Get on there if you want info.
1. Buy Dayz
2. Set up a Dayz Server for you and friends
3. Remove the Zombie and add the Expansion AI mod
4. Be warned Expansion AI are much smarter than Deadside AI
There you go Deadside with better AI, better Base Building, better PVP and PVE action. Better and more variety of vehicles!!!
If these devs want to continue to string along the community then we should simply move on to something bigger and better. With the Huge Mod Community for Dayz your can set up a server however you like. So many guides and people to help makes it easier.
I left the Deadside Discord when the Community Manager got butthurt over my askinga bout Dedi files. He said it would be a huge undertaking for the Devs. Yet they keep giving companies access, of course they make money on those deals we all know this.
You are right.
I also am running a small community, and dedicated server files are essential for that: My homeserver is running anyways, hosting my smarthome, my surveillance, Teamspeak, websites, and of course other gameservers like Conan, Icarus, 7days, Satisfactory, PalWorld, Enshrouded, Valheim, .... I think you'll get the point.
@DEVs: Please deliver the files as promised, thank you.
