Heart Clovers

So I know that the point of collecting Heart Clovers is to build up your romantic relationship with a partner of your choosing, but how many do you need before you're officially dating them? I haven't really decided who I want as my partner yet (I'm somewhere on the fence between Mel and Iris), and clovers are popping around my town like crazy. Will I get in trouble with neighbors if I pick clovers with somebody who isn't my partner?

picking up heart clover and Date have no correlation. After some hour of playing, it looks like Dating is a random event that can happen with any character (there's must be a minimal heart level to date someone). Heart Clover is just a way to boost heart level and build object.

While you do sometimes get the option to flirt or go on a date with certain characters and they do respond with affection when you pick a heart clover with them, I don't think the dating aspect of the game has been implemented yet to the extent that you need to be concerned with who you're going to choose or making them jealous. I've gone on four dates with Ash (only one seemed to be an actual date though), picked a couple dozen heart clovers while hanging out with him, and maxed out his heart level and there is no difference than there was like eighty levels ago in regards to my character interactions with him vs any other townsfolk.

Thanks. I tried picking clovers with multiple different neighbors, but I thought it had to do with the dating system from the comments some of them make: how Terric says he feels "odd" inside, or how Dudley tells you "Thank you __, but my heart belongs to my wife."

I did get one Random Date with Willow, went to the City, Stood by the tree, went home. Have not had another one pop up yet.
