Hint for The Darkness?

So, I'm past the mushrooms, and I'm onto the dark passages.

I've gone there with a glowing mushroom before, and it helps a little, but isn't a solution.

I tried eating it while facing the spooky guy, but that did nothing. I talked to Face about it, and he essentially said I need to commit towards making poor Shade depressed as hell so the Darkness can't see him.

Or having "Confronted his inner loneliness, consciously". Which I feel like suggests means I need to consciously do something as a player for it to work?

The only thing I can think of is just, not opening the game for an extended period of real time, so he gets lonely without me? Which is, frankly extremely saddening- but if it gets him out in the end, alright.

Right now I've just kinda, left him? in the dark zone, near the big abyss pit to just sorta. Sit. I checked on him after I got home from work, but nothing's changed.

I'm really not sure if I'm doing this right-

Is it just I have to wait for a certain milestone day or something? He did have some inner thoughts before you could steer towards leaving or staying, should I just be doing something there when he thinks?

I feel like I'm overthinking this.

Not sure what 'normal' means to you, but to get those thoughts you should be at least outside your cave IIRC.
