i broke my mattock
i broke my mattock (found next to the crystal waterfall) did i just fail the gane ?

No, you can find other mattocks. There are enough to do everything possible with them.

There are plenty and losing your first one is part of the experience.

There are more pickaxes/mattocks and you will can feel free to repeat your mistake much later in the game.
