How to grow a giant mushroom at the right place?

I plant the green mushroom rught under the cliff but it doesn't grow. Instead another green mushroom starts growing 2 meters away from the right spot and eventually it grows as large as I need the first one to grow, but the first one just stops growing.

Maybe I got it. Do I have to plant a pink glowing mushroom next to a cliff and then a green one 1-2 meters from it? Does the pink mushroom grow large and not the green one?

I did the same thing Jock did—I put a green mushroom under the cliff, and a pink/purple mushroom a little ways to the left of that. But the thing is...though I'll be able to harvest the green mushroom, my mattock is broken, so I won't be able to destroy the large pink mushroom in order to grow a green one there. Am I SOL?

Well, I did see another by the mines, but I can't access the area...and I thought perhaps if I got up on that cliff via a giant mushroom, only then would I be able to access that area down by the mines. Don't want anyone to be too spoilerish, but does that matter?

Also wanting to say to Anselm: I'm really enjoying the game! And thanks for porting it to Macs. :)

Edit: Just to add that the mattock I'd gotten initially was the one by the white crystal pools area (in case that has any relevance).

Ah...well, that's good to know, but I have no clue *how* to get down there at the moment , as there is no way to just jump down that I could figure out, but hopefully something will turn up. I'd cracked the impenetrable glass by the gold using that initial mattock...and I've noticed the crack is spreading slowly, or at least it seems to be spreading (brilliant, by the way!), so maybe that's a way in. Hell, I don't know. :)

pay attention to the shaking floor with the wooden balk supporting it from below. You don't need any additional items to get down there
