Mushroom vs Cliff Puzzle

First, I planted green one to the left and purple to the right.
I got an overgrown green mushroom on the left that 'isn't close enough to the cliff'.

I said OK and next time, planted a green one to the right and a purple - to the left.
I got the same result: an overgrown green mushroom on the left that 'isn't close enough to the cliff'.

To make sure I'm not mad, I swapped them again, planting the green one to the left and purple to the right.
I got the same: an overgrown green mushroom on the left that 'isn't close enough to the cliff'.

I wonder maybe there's a particular order or something else to make it work? Say, planting one of them stricly first? It's a long way from home, so I've already spent quite a white fruitlessly experimenting.

The purple one grows, the green one makes it grow. I probably planted the purple first but I don't know if that matters.

My suggestion is to make sure there are no mushrooms there. Pick up a purple mushroom, walk aaaaall the way to the cliff (as right as possible) and then plant it. Then pick up a green one, go back to where the purple one is, and walk left until "eat mushroom" becomes "grow mushroom."

One thing to note is that the giant mushroom is much closer to green, even though it came from the purple mushroom, so it's possible you got tricked out thinking 'oh that must be where I planted the green one'.
