Turns out, when I 'reset' the game (validate integrity of game files), there is a new option to run the game in 1024x768x60 at the in-game options menu. Very strange..
So my guess is, that maybe I have to find a config-file in one of the game sub-folders within the steamapps/common data folder (.ini or .cfg I guess).
I am on one of Nvidias cards (GTX 950) also, since their proprietary drivers are much more advanced under GNU/Linux, I think. The option(s) to force Vsync ON is always activated on my system by default.
p.s.:
I've never encountered a real CRT-Gamer in, well, modern internet-times, nice to meet you ;)
I'll post a message for the "widescreen-problem' in here, as soon as I've managed to find a solution.
EDIT: I've found this article which mentions some configuration files:

So far I figured out that it has something to do with the unity-specific .reg files but I m not able to find Screen Resolution parameters there..
