Some way to stop boats from drifting off
As a new player, the risk of having the boat drift off or get randomly destroyed has stopped me from using them much for exploration. The ability to simply drive a stake into the ground or pull boats onto a beach so they can be pushed back into the water later on would make boats much more attractive.

Having to plop down chests, benches and stuff to constantly dismantle/rebuild the boat is a real immersion killer, not to mention that mobs tend to attack and destroy stuff like that.

900 h game play and no boat has never been destroyed or drifted away what so ever and here is why.
1. I have only parked the boat in Meadows, Black Forest and Plains. If parking the boat in the Swamp it's just asking for it.

2. I 90% of the time smack down a workbench and repair the ship and kill the enemies around if there are any before leaving the area.

If I am far away from the boat the time freezes where the boat is and the only damage that may have occur is from bouncing on a rock or the sea floor.

But sins I have an Workbench there when i come back I always repair if needed before sailing again.

3. If i am in the area but not seeing the boat i always pay attention to the any crackling sound from the boat.

So I can't understand why people have problem with this.

This, except there is some rare bug I've never encountered so far.

Are we playing the same game? I sail towards a beach at full speed to try and beach the boat, jump out and... before a minute has passed, a wave catches the boat and pulls it back out. I only manage to save it because I'm standing nearby watching as it happens.

I'm gently parking my boat close to the shoreline or beside a big rock with deep water around.
The boat will anchor itself in water as soon as you leave the boat where ever you are.

Even sailing at full speed in the middle of the ocean and jumping off the boat, the boat will stop. ( When playing Solo )

I have never had a boat drift off. I actually come to a complete stop away from the shoreline in whatever zone it is and swim to shore. Boat stays put, doesn't drift off, and it just sits there. My friends and I both have boats sitting offshore now for weeks in some areas.

boats dont move if you are not in them. you can even sail at full speed and the moment you jump out it will stop the boat completly

What mods do you have installed?

No mods, vanilla game. Maybe the problem is I'm trying to keep the boat close to my camp so I can fend off those darklings that spawn endlessly and try to break things. Thing is, I'm only trying to spend the night so I can keep sailing the next morning, which means running hundreds of meters into the dark unknown isn't really an option.

Boats will stay put when you are not on them, but If the waves pull back and beach the boat, then sometimes the boat will tip sideways. (often due to an uneven shore below it) IF that happens, then in righting itself, the boat can drift. I have seen that happen a few times at an Island base of mine, until I built a dock and stopped the boat further out in deeper water.

How about just making the game realistic and give us a way to make an anchor and rope, and tie the boat down.

I think the devs allready thought about that when they created the boats and came up with the current solution to be the best way.

The best way, or just something that'll do for now?

Anchors and ropes would cause also problems if wrongly used. and the modelization is pretty accurate.

How would you use them wrong? It would be a something you activate on your ship. An animation shows the anchor drop in the water and then programming takes over to keep the boat from moving.

I can think of an number of problem.

1. The current mechanism that keep the boat from stopping and stay put as soon as you leave it will no longer work. Oh crap I accidentally push the jump botton and ended up in the sea. Bye bye boat bye bye loot.

2. There is no tree nearby to tie my rope around. I have to smack down a pole and enemies start swarming because you making loud noices. Or dropping the iron anchor with a big splash, same results.

3. Enemies will no longer try to smash the boat. They simply cut the rope or destroy the anchor if that is easier and boat drift away.
