The Extractor Blues

I've been playing for too long to be wondering this now, but wonder it I do anyway.
I love my little Dverger buddies and they are always so friendly and seem genuinely concerned for my well being. It pains me to do what I need to do to get that one item you need to get that seemingly only they have. Isn't there some other way to go about it?
If not, that's what I'd change about this game. I'd even sail haflway (or all the way) across the map to fetch some item that I could then trade to the Dverger for that one single item I can only get from them.

A common method to preserve the dvergr while getting at their extractors is to construct a cart and ram it against the crates (or the ward) inside their buildings. The impact damage from a cart isn't associated with the player, so the dvergr don't turn hostile when you break things apart with it.

If only there was some sort of dvergar merchant that you could buy rare dvergar items from.

Actually, that seems like such an enormous oversight that I wonder if I ought to check the guy's inventory again. It'd sure be a constructive money sink.

It's not an oversight, it's basic game balance. There'd be no challenge or any incentive to explore if you could just buy an extractor by raiding earlier biome dungeons for gold.

Also there now is a gold sink - Haldor sells barrel hoops, and you can never have enough of those because barrels are great.

If you make some refined eiter, you can drop it near the boxes and they will be broken via the periodic aoe it emits: No Dverger aggro, all profit, you get to keep your buddies and clear your conciseness.

Maybe make the dvergar tamable, and they listen to you, give all you're treasure and protect you're base. You just need to bribe them with money.

Use refined eitr or just plain old cart and smash the ward.
Once the ward is gone, you can destroy whatever building pieces you want, they will ignore you.
Or just wait for a nightspawn and that will wipe them out eventually.

I hear you on the Dverger guys... though they are always pointing their weapons at me.. so I dunno how friendly they really are. I usually just let the bugs soften them up and then put them out of their misery.

Another tactic, however, is just to gank the extractor and run the hell out of there. No Dverger killed. However they will be permanently aggroed on you so you will have to mark the area and not come back unless you want a fight. I would advise only doing this where there are Dvergers with no stars. A 1 or 2 star Dverger Rogue can stagger you and could be quick death and then a corpse run to some already really unhappy dwarves.

An older thread on this issue and a somewhat humorous take at 07:00 in this stream from Embr. I actually jumped on one of my (previously) favorite content channels as his team was lining up to stab the friendly dvergr in the back and grab the extractor. No! Don't do it! Use the cart to ram the ward and don't kill them! And .... useless. I unsubscribed.
