If the cart can display boxes representing how full it is, why not have a furnture with a few inventory slots that shows the model of the stored item per slot in a defined place. So.. yes, a shelf would be great.
I built a "fake shelf" once, a few boards, chests and item stands behind wooden doors. This worked quite good already.
And I was able to confuse my friend in the next room, because when I opened my shelf the door clipped into his room :D
id also like the look of the things you've suggested as an option

The left side has 4 or 5 armor stands and a door in front. The right side has one board with a lot of item holders where I tried to place my mage staves so far. And a few boxes.
The whole thing can be closed with wood doors.
